“Just giving some friendly advice,” Clarissa put in.

Dream opened her eyes and reached for her beer. “I know. And I appreciate it like crazy. But there’s no need for any of that. There’s not a chance in hell I’d give Adam another opportunity to ruin my life. The engagement’s off, and that’s all there is to it.”

When she was done, she took a sip of her beer and set the bottle down.

The guys and I shared a quick smile, one that showed we were all happy with what she had to say. I wouldn't have thought Dream would get sucked in by Adam for another go round on the bullshit express, but when it came to matters of love it was hard to predict what anyone might do.

“There’s something else, too,” Clarissa added. “The way I remember Adam from back in the day…he was always cool and calm, you know? Confident in himself.”

“Fine line between being confident and being a smug prick,” Jay said, a scowl on his face.

“Well, when he came over, he seemed, I don’t know, off. Like he wasn’t quite right in the head, you know? He seemed unstable, really. If I’m being honest, he kind of scared me. It felt like at any moment the smile might vanish, and he’d do something crazy.”

“If that’s how you felt,” Duncan said, “Then you probably had good reason to think that way. The more I hear about Adam, the more it sounds like the side of him that Dream saw was his true nature, and the cool and calm part of his personality was just a show. Could be that Dream telling him to screw off was the trigger that made him not hide who he really is any longer.”

“That’s exactly how I felt,” Clarissa admitted. “Either way, I didn’t want to be around him for any longer than I had to. And as soon as he was gone, I hurried here to tell you what was going on.”

“Thanks,” Dream said, with genuine gratitude in her voice. “And sorry you had to get dragged into my crap.”

Clarissa shook her head. “Don’t apologize for a thing. I’m your best friend and I’ve got your back.”

“We’ve all got your back,” I said. “You’re the one who knows what’s best for you. But if you want us to make sure this asshole doesn’t come anywhere near you…”

I didn’t finish my sentence. The look on Dream’s face let me know I didn’t need to.

“I’m not going back to him – that’s not something I’d consider, even for a second. But he’s still in town. And Charmed Bay isn’t the biggest place in the world. If he wants to find me here, he will.”

The guys and I shared another hard look.

I watched as Jay cracked his knuckles – the thing he did when he was itching for a fight. At that moment, I was right there with him. There wasn’t a chance in hell we were going to let anything happen to Dream.

If Adam knew what was good for him, he’d watch his back. Some lines, when crossed, couldn’t be walked back. It was a lesson that seemed damn likely Adam was going to learn the hard way.
