DUNCAN

Going to Dream’s unannounced might’ve been a bad idea. But I didn’t care. After Jay’s text asking if we’d seen Dream, I became worried. He later replied it was fine, but without giving any details. I needed to know for myself that she was okay.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Dream and Adam and I wasn’t sure why. Was I envious? Pissed off at the idea of Adam swooping back in and convincing her to come back to Chicago with him? Or was it something else, maybe me feeling a sense of protectiveness over her? Either way, I knew I’d have to see her to know for sure.

I pulled up to Clarissa’s place, seeing one light on inside. After I parked the car and turned off the engine, I gave myself a moment to think it over, to try and figure out if I was about to do something stupid.

Didn’t matter. I was there, and as I sat in the lot, the idea of turning the car back on and pulling away was out of the question.

I hopped out of the car and stepped up to the door. My stomach was tense, like I was picking a girl up for a first date. I snorted in amusement, shook my head at how much of a dumbass I was being, then knocked.

Music played from inside, and I focused for a moment to hear that it was The Smashing Pumpkins. Before I could make out the song, the door opened.

Dream stood there, looking as gorgeous as ever. She was dressed in a gray pair of cotton lounge shorts, and a half-shirt that showed off her toned middle. Her hair was in her usual ponytail, and she didn’t seem to have a drop of makeup on her face – not that she needed it. She regarded me with an expression of surprise.

“Duncan?”

“Hey!” At that moment I realized just how freaking weird it was to show up unannounced. Who, in the age of text messages, did something like that?

Me, I guess.

“What’s up?” I asked.

She cocked her head and looked over my shoulder, as if there might be a camera crew or something.

“Nothing. Just hanging out and going over some work stuff for tomorrow. What’s up with you?”

That was a damn good question. What was up with me?

“Uh, I was in the area coming home from some errands. I don’t live too far from here, so I figured I’d drop in to say hey.’”

She smiled. “Very retro of you, Duncan Wolf.”

I laughed. “I guess retro works.”

A moment passed. It wasn’t an awkward moment – it was something different, as if we were simply enjoying one another’s company before getting into the reason why I was there.

She scoffed and shook her head, as if something had occurred to her that she couldn’t believe she’d forgotten. “What’s wrong with me? Come in!” Dream stepped aside and eagerly gestured for me to enter.

I did and took in the sights of her place. Or Clarissa’s place. The couch was piled with Dream’s bedding and pillows, the coffee table covered in sketches, a half-drunk glass of white wine close at hand. I shut the door behind me and watched as Dream stepped around the kitchen island.

Dream took her phone out of her pocket and turned down the music. “Want something to drink? I’ve got a bottle of wine open, but there’s beer too.”

“Wine’s fine. Where’s Clarissa?” I asked as I stepped over to the kitchen bar.

“She’s working at Blueprint today.”

“Oh, I thought you two were having breakfast this morning, I didn’t realize--”

Dream flashed me a curious smile and shook her head. “Word sure gets around fast in this town. Let me guess, Jay sent you over to check on me?”

“Well he didn’t send me over, but he did ask if we’d seen you this morning, and it had me a little worried.”

“Ahh the joys of small towns,” Dream chuckled before turning around to grab the bottle of wine. She had to bend over to retrieve it, and my eyes went right to her backside, to the bottom of her ass poking out of her shorts as she bent over. My cock shifted, the idea of stepping over to Dream and taking her from behind flashing in my mind.

Get it together, dude, I told myself. You didn’t come here to admire the way she looks in a pair of short shorts.

She turned, standing on her tiptoes to pull down a glass then filled it with the wine.
