“That’s what she told me. But I hadn’t been planning on doing it. After Jay’s text asking about her, and knowing Adam was in town, I just had to see for myself that she was okay..”

The mere mention of Adam was enough to make Evan and Jay’s faces darken.

“And how was she?” Evan inquired.

“Must’ve been distressed out of her mind if she ended up jumping into bed with this dumbass.” Jay gave a grin, letting me know he was only messing around.

“Hey, asshole,” I said with a smirk of my own, shoving him in a joking around sort of way.

“Seriously,” Jay said. “That Adam thing must’ve had her thirty different kinds of shaken up.”

“She seemed fine, really,” I replied. “Dream’s tough as hell. But no doubt she had it on her mind.”

“Anyway,” Jay prodded. “So, one thing led to another and then another and then…”

I shrugged. What else could I say?

“Pretty much.”

After I said the words, a strange expression took hold on Jay’s face. It was an expression I couldn’t puzzle out, like he had something on his mind but wasn’t sure how to say it.

“Alright, out with it,” I said.

“Dream and I…the other day at the farmer’s market…we, well…”

It didn’t take any more explaining than that.

“You’re kidding!” I shouted. Despite the music and everyone’s headphones, my voice rose loud enough to catch the attention of damn near everyone there. I winced, waiting a few seconds for the rest of the gymgoers to go back to their workouts.

“Not kidding,” Jay replied. “And it’s not like I went out to seduce her or anything like that. I agreed to help her with her stand at the market and we ended up going for a walk and…”

“One thing led to another,” I said. “Yep, know exactly what you’re talking about.”

Jay nodded. “The woman’s hard to resist. And it doesn’t help that she’s into all three of us.”

Evan shook his head in disbelief. “Man, both of you guys hooked up with Dream? You know what I did last night? I played Modern Warfare until midnight. Meanwhile you guys are getting it on with the girl of our dreams.” We looked around, but thankfully no one was paying that much attention.

Jay flashed a smile. “Well, bro – guess we’re just better than you.”

I laughed. “Right. That damn middle child syndrome. But don’t screw it up by bragging about your Call of Duty killstreaks. Kind of a turn-off.”

Evan shoulder-checked me with a laugh. “Pricks!”

But the joking around didn’t go on for very long. Up at the front desk I spotted a familiar face.

It was Adam Myles. He was dressed in high-end, colorful Nike sneakers, tight black bike shorts and a matching sleeveless shirt, one that showed off his lanky physique. I could tell by his posture that he was in the process of hitting on the front desk girl who, judging by her expression, didn’t seem interested in his overtures in the slightest.

It was Adam summed up – rich and arrogant and entitled.

“Shit,” Jay said. “Adam’s here.”

The anger boiled in my belly. Knowing what he did to Dream made me see red. When he was finally done flirting with the clerk, seeming to have accepted that she wasn’t into him, he stepped onto the gym floor, a pleased smile on his face as if he’d done the favor of a lifetime by showing her some attention.

I couldn’t resist.

“Don’t do it, dude,” Evan cautioned. “I know what you’re thinking and it’s not worth it.”

Maybe Evan was right, but there wasn’t a chance in hell I was letting Adam off the hook.
