Without another word, I started over to him. He was wrapped up in his phone at first, but as I drew closer, he glanced up and regarded me with that shit-eating, condescending expression I’d seen on his face countless times, the one that made it clear he knew he could get away with whatever he wanted and that if he ever did fall into any trouble Daddy would be there to bail him out.

“If it isn’t the Wolf boys,” he said, looking me up and down as I came to a stop. “As strapping as ever. Very cute that you’re all here to spot one another, clean up one another’s sweat and all that.”

He hadn’t changed a bit, but I knew better than to get baited by his bullshit.

“Here’s the deal, Myles. I don’t know what you said to Dream to upset her. Not a doubt in my mind it involved you pouring some major amounts of bullshit into her ears. But that stops now. I know the way you treated her and there’s not a chance in hell I’m going to stand by and let you do it again.”

He arched his eyebrows. “Are you…threatening me?”

“Yeah, I guess I am. You come near her again and I’ll make sure you regret being in the same state as she is.”

He narrowed his eyes. Adam was an arrogant prick, and nothing made an arrogant prick madder than someone not respecting whatever it was he felt like he deserved to be up his own ass about.

“Now, I don’t know how they do things in the service, big guy, but here in civilization we don’t talk like that unless we’re ready to back it up.”

“Oh, I’m more than ready to back it up. Just say the word and I’ll stick the nearest bench bar up that arrogant ass of yours.”

His eyes formed into hateful little slivers. We were close, close enough that I could feel the fight about to happen.

“Alright, that’s enough. I’m the hot-headed one, remember?” Jay appeared on one side of us, Evan on the other. Each clapped a hand down on my shoulders and led me back, putting enough distance between Adam and me to ease the tension.

“Lucky your keepers are here, Duncan,” Adam said. “Can’t wait to see what happens when they’re not.”

With that, he slipped his Air pods into his ears, flashed me one more cocky smile, then walked away. I watched as he went over to the nearest Elliptical machine, not a care in the world.

Evan, his hand still on my shoulder, led me away from where I stood.

“Dude, I know you want to kick his ass. I want to kick his ass.”

“Same here,” Jay added. “You have no idea how badly I want to kick his ass.”

“But we can’t start shit like that in the middle of the gym. Unless you want to get all of us banned from here, that is.”

I clenched and unclenched my jaw, doing my best not to glare at Adam.

“Yeah, you’re right,” I said.

“And that’s not all,” Jay reminded us. “This isn’t our battle to fight. We can be there for Dream, sure. But we can’t solve it for her. If she wants Adam gone, she’s got to be the one to send him packing.”

I took in one more slow breath. “And we need to trust that she’ll do it.”

“Exactly,” Evan agreed. “I know it goes against all of our natures to step back and let things happen, but it’s the right thing to do. We’ve got to give Dream a chance to work through her problems on her own.”

I looked over at Jay. “When did you become the level-headed one, huh?”

“Trust me, it’s not easy. I wanted to knock the smirk off his face the moment I saw him, but I knew I had to respect Dream’s wishes. She just left an abusive situation with an aggressive man, the last thing she needs is three more hot-heads starting trouble for her.”

And he was right. Jay was absolutely right.
