JAY

Iwoke up the next morning with the biggest damn smile on my face. Dream was sleeping next to me, Evan nowhere to be found. With my eyes half-open I grabbed my phone from the nightstand to see that it was a little after eight.

And there was a text from Evan.

Yo! Dipped out early, figured Dream had enough of a wild night without the shock of waking up next to both of us. Gym later?

I thumbs-upped the message before setting the phone back down. I wouldn’t have minded Evan sticking around. But he’d probably made the right call by giving Dream a little breathing room. I seriously doubted she’d ever done anything like what she’d done last night.

She was still asleep, and I laid there for a time watching her, the sheet pulled over her gorgeous body as her chest rose and fell. I was glad she’d been down for sharing – a woman like her was too special to be tied to only one man. What the future held, I couldn’t say. But at that moment, I was damn glad she was there in my bed.

Part of me wanted to rouse her, to wake her up in the proper way. But I didn’t. She needed rest, to be able to get up when she was good and ready. And more than that, I was hungry as hell. I’d spent the evening working around the property, cutting some firewood, and cleaning up some brush. After that I’d gone out for a drink, Evan calling me before I’d had a chance to order some food.

So, I was starving. I took one last, long look at Dream before carefully rolling off the bed as not to wake her. Carefully, I left the bedroom and shut the door behind me. The morning looked pleasant enough, the sun shining, the wind lolling the pines outside. The fire in the fireplace still smoldered, and I shut the doors in front of it to smother the flames before opening the window to let the heat out. Then I gathered Dream’s clothes from the ground and put them into the bedroom, so they’d be there when she got up.

Once that was done, I went to work in the kitchen. My pantry and fridge were stocked with meats and eggs and dairy from local farmers, just about everything fresh and sourced to within fifty miles of Charmed Bay. Eggs sounded good, so I took out the necessary ingredients and went to work, scrambling the eggs with some cheese and cutting a few slices of bread I’d made myself the day before. After that was in the works, I started some coffee.

It didn’t take long before the smells and sounds roused Dream. The bedroom door opened, and she stepped out, dressed and ready for the day. Sure, her hair was a bit messy, and it was apparent her clothes had been pulled off in a hurry. But she still looked so damn gorgeous I wanted to scream.

“Hey,” she said with a smile as she shut the bedroom door behind her.

“Morning.”

She craned her neck to see what I was making. “Look at you, Mr. Up-and at ‘em.”

I chuckled as I moved the eggs around on the cast iron pan. “Figured you’d need some replenishment after last night.” Maybe it was a mistake to bring up last night so soon. But I wanted to gauge her reaction to it, to see if she felt strange, or if she just wanted to talk.

Dream’s eyes widened for a moment, then she let out a sigh as she came over to the small table near the kitchen.

“Oh yeah,” she said. “Last night.”

I offered a small smile as I prepared her a cup of coffee, setting it down in front of her along with a bit of milk.

“You doing OK?” I asked, turning my attention back to the food. I sprinkled some more cheese on top of the eggs.

“Yeah.” She nodded, confident in her answer. “I mean, it’s insanely weird what happened. But the good kind of weird, you know? And I must admit, it’d been on my mind since that night at Red’s.”

It was a major relief to hear her say that. The last thing I wanted was to make Dream feel uncomfortable.

“Good,” I said. “And it goes without saying that we’ve all been thinking about it too.”

She smiled slightly. “No offense, but that’s a little strange to hear. I’m glad for it, of course, but knowing you all have been talking about me like that…not sure what to make of it. Guess I should be a little flattered.”

I chuckled as I placed the toast on a plate, bringing it over to her along with some butter.

“We didn’t talk about you like you were a piece of meat, or a toy that we were all fighting for time with. Most of the conversations were about making sure you were cool with what might happen. We definitely didn’t want to make you upset or anything.”

That got another smile. “I appreciate it. But…you guys are cool with this? With me…doing what I’m doing.”

I shrugged. The eggs were done, so I pushed the fluffy mounds onto some plates, the cheese perfectly melted.

“We’ve never been like that. Jealousy’s just never been a part of our relationship. Besides, we’ve shared women before, though not so directly.”

“So, I’m the first that you two have…been with like that?”

“Yep. So don’t worry – that was a first for us, too.”

“And how do you feel?” she asked as I brought the rest of the food over and sat down across from her. “I appreciate that you guys are thinking about me, but whatever this thing is we’ve got going, there are four hearts involved.”
