DUNCAN

There were no words to describe how I felt when I threw open the door to Dream’s bedroom to see Adam seconds away from hitting her.

So, I didn’t use words.

Instead, I strode across the bedroom and clapped my hand down hard onto Adam’s shoulder. I turned him in place, spinning him around on his feet.

“Duncan!” he said, doing this pathetic tone of surprise, as if he were about to tell me there’d been some kind of misunderstanding. “What are you—"

I wasn’t in the mood to hear a single word from him. I pulled my fist back and brought it forward, connecting with his jaw and sending him flying backward, hitting the wall next to Dream. She let out a sharp scream, her hands going to her mouth and her eyes flashing wide.

I glanced over my shoulder to see Jay and Evan standing there. The hard expressions on their faces made it crystal-clear that they were ready to join the fight. But as mad as I was, I could at least think clearly enough to know not to make this a three-on-one brawl.

Adam was stunned, but he wasn’t out. Blood trickled down his nose and he placed his fingertips on it, glancing down at his now blood-covered hand.

“You’ll pay for that!”

His face flashed with anger, and he stood up, rushing toward me. I could tell by his movement that he was three sheets to the wind, and all I had to do was step out of the way as he lumbered across the room. He took a few steps forward before he realized he’d overshot the target. And then it took him a few more steps after that to course correct.

Adam slammed into Evan, who didn’t move an inch.

“Going somewhere?” he asked.

Adam pushed off Evan’s chest and turned toward me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the broken shards of glass from his booze bottle on the floor. The sight reminded me that, while Adam was outnumbered, he was still dangerous.

“You OK, Dream?” I asked over my shoulder.

“Yeah,” she said. “Just…just shaken up.”

Jay stepped over to her, making sure to keep an eye on Adam as he did.

“I’ll get her out of here,” he said. He placed his hand on her shoulder, regarding her with an expression of love and concern. “Come on, OK? Let’s go to the roof and get some fresh air.”

She nodded, his words allowing her to snap out of the daze-like spell she was in. Jay led her through the room. But before he could take her out, Adam glanced up to see that the door was open. With a panicked look on his face, he broke into a surprisingly quick sprint and rushed past Evan and down the stairs.

“Damnit!” shouted Evan. “We need to get him, make sure he gets escorted out of here.”

“Good call,” I said, frustrated at myself for letting Adam get away. “Jay, take care of Dream. Evan, let’s finish this with Adam.”

“Come on,” said Jay, his voice exuding a warmth that I couldn’t remember ever hearing from him.

Dream, still shaken, left the bedroom with Jay. Once that was done, Evan and I hurried out and down the stairs.

“Get the hell out of the way!” shouted Adam, as he ran past the guests.

We reached the first floor just in time to watch as he pushed his way through the crowd, people making noises of surprise as he did. He nearly toppled over the Christmas tree as he stumbled into it.

“Where the hell does he think he’s going?” asked Evan, the two of us watching as Adam struggled through the crowd on the way to the back deck.

“Don’t know. But we need to make sure he gets thrown out on his ass.”

“Gladly.”

Together, Evan and I weaved through the crowd. Everyone there seemed to understand that we’d arrived to handle the Adam situation, the guests moving out of the way to let us through. Evan and I reached the back deck just in time to watch as Adam slammed into the crowd back there.

And this time, no one moved.

“Get out of the way, assholes!” snarled Adam as he struggled to get past. “Move it!”
