When everyone there realized what was going on, that Evan and I had come to fetch him, the party was on our side. Adam tried desperately to work his way through.

“So,” said Evan. “You got one shot at him. But it’s looking to me like he might need one more lesson. What do you think?”

I smirked. “Right there with you, bro.”

Without another word, Evan stepped toward Adam. Once he was close, he pulled back his fist and brought it in a sharp arc against his face. Adam dropped to his knees; the blow having knocked him into a state of submission.

“You know Adam,” said Evan. “It’s a damn shame we need to explain to you that it’s not OK to threaten women like that. But what do you say, lesson learned?”

Adam nodded dumbly.

“Good,” said Evan, grabbing him by the arm and bringing him to his feet. “Now, let’s get your ass out of here, got it?”

Without a word of protest, Adam was pulled to his feet. I came over to take him by the other arm, Evan and I dragging his sorry ass out of the house. Once we were out front, I spotted a slick sports car that I had no doubt was his. Evan pulled Adam’s keys out of his pocket, and we checked to make sure the fob worked on the car.

“Now,” said Evan. “I’m thinking you’re a little too drunk to drive. Because I’m such a nice guy, I’ll drop these keys off at your daddy’s house when I can, maybe fill him in on what his son’s been up to.”

“As for you, shithead,” I said. “Start walking. And if you’re smart, you’ll be on the first flight to Chicago once you’ve slept off your hangover.”

“But…” It was all he could manage.

I shoved him forward, and Adam glanced over his shoulder at us, as if to see whether we were serious or not.

“Now.” My tone was hard, uncompromising.

He nodded obediently before turning and starting his way down the road. Evan and I watched, making sure he was in good enough shape to march his ass home. When he finally made his way around the bend and was gone, we headed back inside.

The danger was over. But it wasn’t finished – we still had to make sure Dream was OK.
