“It wasn’t you, necessarily; it was the gun. I don’t like them. I don’t like seeing them.”

“The gun? I’d never aim a gun at you.”

“I just... There was an incident… back home. There was this guy, and he-he—” Her breathing begins to pick up faster.

“Holly, relax, you’re safe here. You are safe with me.” I haven’t even heard her story, and I’m already calculating how long it will take me to have a jet ready to fly out to Sydney.

“He, um, he was in the club and I walked in. I was meant to be meeting Reilly, and he was there. He thought I was her… He wanted to hurt Bray and mistook me for my sister.”

I rub my hands up and down her back. I’m not sure if I’m trying to calm heror myselfat this point. “What did he do, Holly?” My voice is hoarse.

“He pointed the gun at me. I really thought he was going to shoot. Then I heard the gunfire. He shot Bray right in front of us all—my brother-in-law was in a coma for two months. I had to watch my sister, my twin sister, have her heart break each day he didn’t wake up.”

“I’m sorry you experienced that. What happened to the shooter?” I ask, purely for selfish reasons.

“I don’t know. Zac just told me I didn’t need to worry, that the guy wouldn’t ever be seen again. I didn’t ask questions.”

Who the fuck are these guys Holly was hanging around with back in Sydney? “Who’s Zac?” I pry, letting my agitation and jealousy creep out.

Holly smiles. “Zac is—well, he owns the hottest nightclub in Sydney. Oh, and he’s alsohot. Like GQ hot.” She laughs at my obvious distress. “Aside from his looks, he’s Bray’s brother and my good friend Alyssa’s husband.”

“You couldn’t have led with that?” I ask her as my body loosens slightly.

“I could have, but it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as fun. I’m going to go have a shower. You can finish making coffee and tell Neo I don’t need a doctor.”

“Deal, but I’d much rather be joining you in the shower.” My mouth travels up the side of her neck.

“Mmm, that would be fun. But, no, sorry. You invited your cousin to my apartment, so you entertain him.”

“I can tell him to leave,” I suggest.

“That would be rude.” Her lips mimic mine and travel up the side of my neck until she gets to the corner of my mouth.

“It’s Neo; he’s used to me ordering him around.”

“Anyone ever tell you that you’re really good at negotiations?”

“I run multi-million-dollar companies; it comes with the territory.”

Holly’s head pulls back and her eyebrows draw down in confusion. “What do you mean you run companies?”

“Don’t be so shocked. It’s the modern age. The mafia isn’t just a bunch of thugs anymore.”

“I didn’t think you were a thug. Well, not entirely. I guess I didn’t really put much thought into what you actually do.”

“Good, don’t overthink it. It’s a family business—one I was born into and one I’ll die in. It’s the way it is. I can’t change that.”

“You couldn’t leave?”

“Never.”

“Okay. I’m going for that shower.” Holly jumps up and walks out of the room with a look in her eyes I can’t decipher.

I stand at the bathroom door and listen for a while, making sure she hasn’t fainted again. I can hear her rummaging around and then the water starting. I decide to go and find Neo. Though, considering the size of Holly’s apartment, it doesn’t take me long to track him down on the balcony with a cigarette in his mouth.

“She okay?” he asks as I slide the door closed behind me.

“Yeah, I think so.”
