“Josh, they are not hanging out inside the apartment. I’m inviting my sisters over, and we’re having a girls’ day. Your wrestlers can serve and protect from downstairs.”

“Okay, but Reilly is not helping Emily buy clothes.” Josh agrees to have the men wait in the lobby.

He cups my face between his hands and slowly brings his lips down onto mine. The moment our mouths touch, I forget that we’re not alone in the room. Everything else drains out, everything but the feel of his lips on me.

The kiss ends way too soon for my liking. I cling to the lapels of his jacket tighter. I’m not sure I want him to leave. Maybe I should go with him. No, my mind is such a mess right now. Some distance will be good.

“You okay?” Josh asks.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I answer. “You are coming back, right?” I ask. What if this is one of his cruel, twisted games from the past and he’s going to leave me here?

“Emmy, I promise there is nothing that will keep me from coming back to you.” He kisses me again. Leaning down, he whispers in my ear, “There’s a phone in the bedroom drawer for you—use it if you need me. My number’s saved. There’s also a gun placed in that drawer, one in the top left drawer in the kitchen, one in my study under my desk, one in the lounge room under the coffee table and another in the entry table, middle drawer. Shoot first, ask questions later if you have to.” He winks at me as he backs away, my eyes wide. Why the hell does he have so many guns in the house?
