“Emmy, wake up. We’re here.” I kiss her forehead and run my fingers through her hair. I’ve just pulled up to one of the family farming properties in Western Australia. It took a five-hour plane trip and a three-hour drive to get out here. But this is the perfect spot to be alone with Emmy. No one comes to this cabin; the staff who work the farm live in housing on the other side of the property.

There is nothing to see but red dirt and dust. But I fucking love it out here. No fuckers to piss me off or get on my nerves. No need to attempt at being social, even though all I want to do is rip everyone’s head off every other minute. This is the one place I’ve been able to just be me, without judgement.

I doubt anyone other than the staff here even knows this cabin exists. I built it three years ago, when I needed an escape from the world. I spent six weeks out here before I went back home and faced my father’s rage. People think I’m psychotic and cruel, but I’ve got nothing on what that man could do. At a minimum, I have some limits. Or, at least, I like to think I do.

Emily’s not budging. I get out of the car and jog around to her door. Reaching in, I get a whiff of that scent I want to surround every room of every house I own in. Emily, she’s fucking mind-alteringly intoxicating, like I’m on a constant high when she’s near me.

She stirs in my arms but doesn’t wake up. She exhausted herself on the plane. Her breakdown tore me in half, just seeing her fall apart like that, hearing the small snippets she told me about what that fucker Trent did to her. I bury my head into her neck and breathe in. I need to calm the inferno that’s blazing inside me.

Emily deserves this getaway; she deserves some happy memories—ones filled with being loved and worshiped like the fucking goddess she is. I don’t care what it takes. I will give her as many of those moments as I can.

“Mmm, where are we?” she asks as I’m walking up the steps.

“This is one of the family farms; it’s secluded. There’s no one out here except you and me, Em. This is what I call fucking paradise.”

“Okay, I’d like to be thoughtful and tell you that you can put me down. I won’t though. I like being in your arms.”

“Well, it’s a good thing I like you being in my arms too.”

Opening the door, I carry her through to the living room. Emily spots the windows at the back of the cabin.

“Oh my God! Josh, put me down. Put me down!” she shrieks.

“But you just said I could keep you here in my arms, Emmy.”

“Yeah, but that was before I saw this. Put me down.” She jumps out of my arms and practically runs over to the windows.

“Josh, it’s so beautiful. I can’t believe it. Look at them.” She’s pointing at the mob of brumbies in the fields. It’s a sight, that’s for sure.

“I knew your family had horses, but this is something else. Isn’t it spectacular?”

“Yeah, it is. These aren’t ours though, babe. These are brumbies; they’re wild.”

“I don’t care. I love them. I could sit here for hours watching them.”

“How about I cook us up something to eat. You can go sit out on the patio and watch them while you wait.” I wrap my arms around her, trailing kisses up the side of her neck.

“Mmm, I can cook dinner. You’ve been driving for hours; you should sit down and relax.”

“Emmy, go and sit outside. I’ll bring you out a glass of wine. I want to cook for you. Let me cook for you.”

“Okay, but I can help if you want.”

“What I want is for you to go and sit down and watch the brumbies.”

I wait until I see her settle into a lounge chair on the patio, before I head into the kitchen and find something to eat. I had some of the staff head up here today and stock up for us.

Deciding on omelettes, because I don’t want to be away from Emmy for too long, I get all the ingredients out. I pour her a glass of red wine and put some grapes, cheese and crackers on a platter. Taking it out, I set the platter on the table next to her and hand her the wine.

“It’s a little chilly out here. Do you want a blanket?” I ask her.

“Thank you. I’m not cold. I love it out here.”

“Okay, I’m making omelettes. You do still eat eggs, right?”

“How did you know I ever ate eggs?” She smirks.
