I find myself handing her the keys. There’s something about the smile on her face. If I have to risk my half a million dollar Lamborghini to keep that smile there, then I will. I might cry if she destroys my car. But I’ll get over it. It’s just a car. It’s just a car. I keep repeating the mantra in my head. She is everything. This is just a car. My fingers loosen around the keys as I place them in her palms.

“Really, you’re letting me drive? Yes! Thank you, thank you, thank you.” She throws her arms around my neck as she jumps up and down on the spot, full of excitement.

“Emmy, there is nothing you could ever ask me for that I’d say no to.”

She raises her eyebrows at me, mischief written all over her face. “Well, there was this one thing I read about…”

“Almost nothing, babe. There are a few things I’m never saying yes to. So, whatever it is that you’ve read in one of your romance books, unless it involves only two people—those two people being you and me—don’t even ask.”

Her lips spread into a smile. “So that’s a no to a threesome then?”

“That’s a fuck no, Emily. There is no fucking chance on earth I’m ever sharing you with anyone.”

Emily laughs as she makes her way to the driver’s side of the car. “It’s a really good thing I don’t ever want you to share me then. Come on, get in. I’m about to take you on the ride of your life.” She winks as she climbs into the car.

I send a little prayer up to anyone listening. Please let my car make it out of this in one piece. Shit, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen Emily drive. Can she fucking drive? Getting into the passenger’s side, I buckle in.

“You do have a driver’s license, right?” I ask her.

“Ah, not on me. Why? Will it be a problem if we get pulled over?”

“No, but you do know how to drive? I mean, you have passed a driving test before, haven’t you?” I can feel the tiny balls of sweat forming on my eyebrows. Fuck, this is making me more nervous than I anticipated.

“Relax. My daddy taught me to drive before I could even walk.” She smiles.

I watch as she turns the engine. She runs her hands over the steering wheel, then over the gear stick. “Hold on,” she says.

Hold on? For what? I don’t get to ask her before the tyres are screeching and she’s pulling, screaming, up the driveway.

“Fuck, Emily Livingston, slow the fuck down!” I yell as she slams her foot on the breaks, the car coming to a stop just before the huge fucking iron gates at the front of the property—the iron gates that haven’t been opened yet.

“No, fuck no. That is not how we drive this car, Emily. You are a Sunday granny driver. We ain’t in some Nascar race right now. A leisurely Sunday drive is the vibe we’re going for.”

Emily stares at me for a minute before she speaks. When she does, her voice is low and quiet. “Josh, I don’t have to drive. If you want to swap seats, we can.” She actually pouts at me.

Now, I’m fucking confused. Emily has never pouted at me. That low voice she just used was different. What the fuck is wrong with her? I don’t know how to handle this. Of course, I want to switch seats with her and take my damn car back. But what I want more is to see that smile back on her face. I want her to be happy and free.

“Emmy, I don’t care if you want to drive. I just want you to be safe—that’s all.” I grab her hand and bring her fingers up to my mouth, placing a kiss on each one.

“Okay, well, as long as you’re sure. I’ve always wanted to drive one of these fancy cars.” She beams.

Why the fuck do I feel like I just got played? Did she just emotionally bribe me to get her way? I can’t believe I just fell for it that easily. Damn, she’s good. The goofy smile I’m now sporting is hard to hide.

“What’s wrong?” Emily asks as she ever so slowly pulls out of the driveway.

“Absolutely nothing. Why would something be wrong?”

“Because you’re smiling weird. Why?” She stares at my face.

“First, keep your eyes on the road. You’re driving around extremely important cargo right now. Second, don’t let my girlfriend hear you say I’m weird. She gets a little trigger-happy whenever she hears that.” I laugh.

“Your girlfriend sounds like a cool chick. Also, I didn’t say you were weird. I said your smile was.”

“Oh, she’s the coolest. Beautiful, smart, loyal, sexy, stunning… Did I mention she’s beautiful?” My eyes travel up and down her body. She’s wearing a royal blue sundress. It’s loose-fitting with thin straps. Her hair is up in a ball of mess on top of her head, her face free of any makeup. Right now, she looks perfect.

“You’ve mentioned it once or twice.” She smiles. “Are you ready?”

“For what?” I ask.

“For the ride of your life, baby.” She laughs as she puts her foot down before shifting gears. The car takes off. I’m pulled back into my seat with the force.

Fuck me. I look ahead and see we are merging onto the freeway. Where the fuck is she even going? Why didn’t I know she was such a lead foot?

I look behind us to check that the security detail is keeping up. They’re not. “Ah, babe, I need you to slow down a bit. You need to let the security cars tail you. At this speed, they can’t keep up.”

“Why do we need security cars tailing us? And what kind of security are they if they can’t keep up?”

“Because I’m a VIP, baby! And trust me, they’re the best. I wouldn’t put just any random security on you.”

Emily looks in the rear-view mirror. With a huff, she slows down. I can at least breathe a little easier now.
