“They were.” Arturo chimed in, “people will be gunning for you.”

I sighed and sat down at the table. “Yeah, we’re going to have to watch our backs. Find out who we can trust.”

“Let's talk about all that later.” Gia set a pan in the middle of the table. “Let's just enjoy tonight and celebrate Alora taking over the Volante Family.” She started filling our cups and gave me a wink.

“Agreed.” Luka sat down beside me. “Cheers to the sexiest boss in The Consortium.”

“Cheers.” Everyone raised their glasses.

We finished dinner and sat talking at the table. Luka cracking jokes.

“I have to hit the lady's room.” Gia stood up.

“Me too, so hurry!” Elena pointed at Gia.

“Elena, you can use the bathroom in my room, just back there.” Arturo offered.

She patted his shoulder. “Thanks.”

The doorbell rang. “Who could that possibly be?” Luka looked at me slyly. “Alora, I think you better get it.”

I raised my eyebrows at him. “You’re being weird, you go get it.”

“Fine, but you won't get your surprise.” He shrugged.

I sighed. “I detest surprises.” I stood up and made my way to the elevator, opening it. One of the men stood there, a puppy in his hands.

The puppy turned to me and barked. “Mrs. Rossi.” He handed me the puppy and closed the elevator doors.

I looked down at the big ball of fir in my arms, he cocked his head to the side, barked then licked my face.

“I think he likes you.”

I turned and saw Luka leaning against the back of the couch. “Did you?” My voice cracked.

He smiled and stood up walking over, petting the top of his head. “Yeah, I figured it was time you had another dog in your life.”

I felt tears welling up in my eyes. “Luka, I don't know what to say.” I looked down at the puppy, then looked back up at him. A huge grin on my face I couldn't wipe away.

A soft sigh rolled from his lips as he reached up resting his hand on my cheek. “Now, that's all I need, that's what I’ve been waiting for. Mission accomplished.”

“What?”

“That smile, directed at me.” He leaned in and kissed my lips. “I’ve been trying to make you smile since our first dance.”

“So that was what your mission was?”

“Can we come see the pup now?” Gia asked, Arturo, Nick, and Marco behind her.

“Yeah, come on, you all knew?”

They all walked over, petting the puppy and laughing. “Oh my gosh, he is so cute.” Gia gushed. “What are you going to call him?”

I looked down and smiled, petting his head. “Max.” Luka put his arm around my shoulder and kissed the top of my head.

“Why do you have this picture beside your bed?” Elena walked up, holding a picture out, showing Arturo.

Arturo’s jaw tightened. He let out a long sigh. He walked over and took it from her hands. “She’s someone from my past. Why?”

“I know her. She’s older now, looks a little different, goes by Mandy.” She turned and looked at me. “Alora, she was one of Gabriele’s girls.”

Arturo looked at Luka, then back at Elena. “When did you see her last?”

“The day you guys got me out. She was on the first truck.”

Arturo’s face went ghost white. He looked at Luka, shaking his head. “The first truck was pulling off when we arrived. She was right fucking there!”

Luka walked over grabbing his shoulders. “This is the best lead we have had in seven years. We’ll find her. Now we know she’s alive!” Luka nodded his head, tears falling from his eyes. He pulled Arturo into a hug. “She’s alive.”
