“We’re here most Wednesday nights, Brynn.” Seraphina gave her a sympathetic smile. “You’re always welcome.”

She wished she could join them. She had the feeling they would be good for her. “Thanks.”

But she wouldn’t. By next Wednesday, she would be working, and she wouldn’t see much of these amazing women again. She glanced down at her phone as she started the walk back to her cabin. She would go up and get Duke and make a plan for next week.

Major. Major was calling her. She slid her finger across the screen to accept the call. “Hey. Is everything okay?”

“You told me I could call you.” His voice was deep and rich over the line.

“Of course.” She wanted to help him if she could. “What can I do? Do you need me to watch Dolly?”

She could dog-sit for him. She turned the corner that led to her cabin and then realized his big truck was in the drive. Her heart felt caught in her throat.

He was standing in front of her door, his back to her. “You told me if I changed my mind, I could call you.”

“I did.” He was here. She wasn’t sure what had happened, but he was here.

“I’m calling you, Brynn.”

“Do you want to talk?” She didn’t want to talk. She wanted to touch him. She wanted to kiss him. She wanted him to make everything go away for a few hours. But she would slow down her rapidly beating heart and talk to him if that was what he needed. He might only want to be friends. He might be reaching out because it would be hard to talk to someone else.

She watched as his head fell forward and he reached out to lean against the side of the cabin. “I don’t want to talk, Brynn. I’m riding the edge of something tonight, and I probably should go home. I’m sorry. It’s been a terrible day and all I could think of was getting you underneath me. I wanted to forget about everything but you, and that isn’t fair.”

She hung up the phone, sliding it back into her pocket, and walked toward him. “I don’t care about fair, Major. I want to be with you for as long as I can.”

He turned and the look on his face had her running to his arms. He caught her and then his lips were on hers and she didn’t think about anything except him.

Major kissed Brynn and realized what his life had been missing. Her. The last week he’d felt the loss of her, but now he also thought that he’d missed her before he’d even met her. Being around Brynn had made him believe there had been a hole in his heart for years and she was the only one who could fill it.

Her arms wrapped around him as she opened her mouth and let him inside, their tongues tangling, electricity flowing through him like a live wire.

All day, he’d been on the edge, the reality of his father’s situation pushing him into a darkness he was afraid he might not come back from, but Brynn was all light.

She might be all the light he needed.

“I’m sorry I pushed you away,” he whispered between kisses.

“I understood why.” Her hands ran up his back. “What I don’t understand is why you changed your mind.”

“Because I was reminded today that life is too short. I was trying to protect myself, but I don’t want to.” It was what he’d decided as he’d talked to his father. He’d figured out that there was no real protecting himself from Brynn. He would miss her either way. He would spend the rest of his time regretting that he’d let her go without adoring her the way she should be adored, or he could ache the loss of her but know he’d given her something of himself.

Memories. He could give her memories.

He was going to start tonight.

“I don’t want to, either. I want to spend time with you. Even if it doesn’t last very long,” she vowed.

“Then take me inside.” He needed her so badly, more than he’d ever needed anyone in his life.

Brynn stepped away and pulled her keycard out. Her hands were trembling, and he realized she needed this, too. She felt the pull the same way he did. She’d likely felt the void of the last week.

The door came open, but he stopped her from walking inside. He pulled her close and stared down into those gorgeous eyes of hers. “I’m sorry. I wasted time. Time we should have had.”

She went on her toes so they were nose to nose. “Stop apologizing and let’s use the time we have. Make love to me, Major. I won’t regret anything except not knowing what it means to go to bed with you.”
