“OMG, I love this song!” Luna screeches, grabbing my hand and dragging me to the dance floor as Whitney Houston sings about dancing with somebody. We dance through a few more songs together, but whenFootloosestarts, a bunch of girls scream, and I use that as an excuse to make my exit and get a drink. I look around the room for Diesel; I spot him by the exit, and he looks like he is arguing with his cousin, Sax. I move in their direction, and Cuyler steps in front of me, handing me a bottle of water. I try to look around him, but he angles his body as if to block my view.

“Having fun?” He asks with a raised brow, looking extremely handsome in his grey suit with what looks to be one of his white singlets underneath.

“I am, I was a bit thrown off by the photographers.” He smiles at my comment.

“You get used to it after a while, it comes with the territory. We sometimes get them on boats close to the shore, trying to get pics of us. You know, trying to get some dirt on the kids of the rich and famous.”

“I should go see where Diesel is,” I say, changing the subject.

“I’m right here.” Diesel states, walking up beside Cuyler, placing his hand on his friend's shoulder, giving it a squeeze before Cuyler says bye and walks away.

“What was all that about?” I ask, folding my arms across my chest and Diesel mimics my stance.

“All what?” He questions, like I didn’t just see him arguing.

“You arguing with Sax and Cuy intercepting me on my way over.”

Diesel sighs, and his shoulders slump. “Sax wanted to warn me about you, saying you were more his type of girl. I told him he could stop and leave before I had him thrown out.”

My heart thumps in my chest. There is no way his cousin would know, his father promised me that no one would know so long as I played my part.

“Don’t worry about him, he likes to stir trouble and always wants what I have.”

Diesel leads me out onto the dance floor when a slow song comes on. I wrap my arms around his neck, and he pulls me tight to his body.

“I’m falling for you hard, Cyrus,” he whispers, and I am too, but with this blackmail hanging over my head, I don’t know what to do. I want to believe that he would forgive me, but everything I know about Diesel tells me that when he finds out his father used me to get to him, he won’t want anything to do with me.

“I’m falling for you too, Diesel, but always promise me the day. Even if we fight, don't leave me, wait until the end of the night.”

“I’m never leaving you, Cyrus, you have wormed your way in, and I never thought that was possible.”

Lux pushes her way in between us once the slow song finishes, and Luna stands beside her. “Go do whatever boys do and let us girls dance,” Lux declares. Diesel smiles and nods at her, leaving us to dance.

We dance until our feet are well and truly blistered from the new heels. Luna begs for one more song and we agree.

Static comes over the speakers and people groan and boo that the music has stopped.

“Hello?”

“It’s time to play nice.”

Panic sets in when my brain registers that it’s mine and Diesel’s father’s conversation we had not that long ago. Luna clutches my arm and whispers.

“Is that you?” I nod, scanning the room.

“That wasn’t part of our deal… You wanted me to…”

“I know what I wanted you to do, and now, plans change.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking. I can’t stand him. He is arrogant and self-centred.”

My eyes lock with Diesel’s, pleading with him to give me a chance to explain. The light hearted guy I had finally had a chance to see is gone, he isn’t going to understand like I had hoped. He already hates me.

Mr. Briar laughs. “I’m not exactly asking.”

“Any special requests?”

“Make him believe that you’re falling for him. Do whatever it takes.”
