“Be careful of them, we keep them away from others for a reason. You have just been thrown to the wolves Miss Jamison, and I suggest you watch your back.” Mr. Jones says, his warning clear in his voice. I nod and make my way out of his office. The guys have disappeared, but they couldn’t have gotten far.

The whole floor seems empty when I get back to my room. Diesel can suck it. I don’t particularly want to share with him either, but until the room situation is sorted, he can just deal.

Chapter Four

Diesel

I try calling my father’s phone for the hundredth time. He has been avoiding my calls because the asshole will know exactly what my problem is, and I know that he isn’t due back home until today. I avoided my room last night and slept in the damn games room until I knew why she was here. My father doesn’t do anything for nothing. If she is in my room, he has a plan, and I hate being blindsided. What the fuck does he want me to do with her? I want to break her even more now that I know my father has some kind of interest in her.

My phone buzzes as an email comes through. I called my friend Marlow the other day to ask if he could look into her family for me. Another contact I made through my father, but one who is loyal to me. My father is a major benefactor of their company, Olympia. They genetically engineer kids to have fucking super abilities. It’s weird as fuck to think about, but they are nice enough, and one thing I happen to agree with my father on is that it pays to have contacts.

I read through the email, Cyrus Jamison, seventeen, almost eighteen actually. When I read who her father is, I know exactly why she is here. I shake my head, but why didn’t he tell me? What is this asshole up to?

I keep reading, and there is another file attached, hospital records from last year. She had surgery for a skin graft and some damage to a tendon in her arm from a car accident she was in. That explains her cardigans. I look over a few pages of images from the accident. Holy fuck, the entire car caught on fire. Even a suicide attempt just before she left the hospital.

The other folder is her rehabilitation files. Who would have thought the fragile little girl used to party.

I decide to try calling my mother before I hike my way over to the house. I haven’t called her yet because I don’t like to involve her in mine and my father’s arguments, but I know he gets in today, he always does before the first fights to make sure everything is set for the VIPs, usually a bunch of suits that will line his pockets in shady business deals.

“Diesel, what a surprise. We just walked in, and I was asking your father if you were coming over for dinner.”

“I’m not sure, Mum, I have a lot to organise with all of the new Alphas starting, and one is a pretty high-profile kid that I need to make sure transitions well.”

“That’s okay, honey, I just miss your face.”

I smile, I love my mother. She is the gentlest soul, and I don’t understand how she ended up with someone like my father. I know he loves her, and he does treat her well. I don’t think she knows about all the affairs that he has behind her back, though. I tried to tell her once, and she brushed me off, and since then, I have decided to not interfere in their marriage.

“I miss you, too. Hey, is dad around? I have been trying to reach him, and it’s important.”

“He is, he is right here. I love you.”

“Love you too.”

“Son,” he says abruptly, and I know he is trying to be courteous in front of my mother.

“Father, I have been trying to call you.”

“I’m a busy man and can’t answer everyone's calls all of the time. What do you need?”

“An explanation on why a certain blue-eyed girl is sleeping in my bedroom.”

“Did you not get my email?” he asks, and I know he is full of shit and didn’t send one. What game are you playing, old man?

“No,” I state. “I did not.”

“Her father is a friend of mine, and she has been in a little bit of trouble, and he asked me to look out for her. I need you to keep an eye on her and make sure she stays out of trouble.”

“I’m not a fucking babysitter,” I spit.

“I know you’re not. But I don’t trust anyone else with her, a man like this is someone we want on our side. I was going to put her in with Lux, but the girls' dorms are at capacity.”

“Why not put her in with one of the other guys?”

“And risk them fucking her and screwing this up? I know you, Diesel, and I know you despise me, you make that no secret. There is no hidden agenda here, the girl is too fragile for this world, we just need to keep an eye on her for a little while. Some girl will be traded in a few weeks to a new school, and we can switch her dorms. But until then, no one touches her and try to be friendly. I don’t need her running scared. I’ll see you at orientation night. Make sure you’re ready and get your bids in. I have sent you over a few very suitable options and the deals their fathers have offered. I don’t give a shit who you pick, as long as she is on the list.”

He doesn’t wait for me to respond, he ends the call. I sigh and turn to find Cuyler staring at me.

“Your father?” he asks, and I nod.
