Noah was in the kitchen, talking with Press. “She wants to go home,” I said. “While I don’t think it’s a good idea, I can’t force her to stay somewhere she doesn’t feel comfortable.”

“I have another idea,” said Noah.

“I’m open to any suggestions.”

“Doc’s parents have a ranch adjacent to Los Caballeros. Ridge is two doors down.”

“She doesn’t know them.”

“Actually, she does,” said Press. “She’s friends with one of Doc’s sisters.”

“Jada Yáñez lives near Butler Ranch too,” Noah added.

“Does Doc’s sister still live at home?” I asked.

“No, but Jada does,” said Noah. “The thing about staying at Butler Ranch is their security system is as tight as Seahorse’s. Laird and Sorcha Butler are also about the nicest people who ever lived.”

“I’ve met them a few times.”

“So you know what I mean.” Noah put his hand on my shoulder. “Run it by her and see what she thinks.”

I nodded.

“She cannot return to that apartment,” said Press, looking out the window.

“I agree it isn’t ideal, but it’s also her home.” If Luisa wouldn’t go along with staying at Butler Ranch, there might not be an alternative. At least until I could find another place for her, my mom, and me to live.

“They have two guesthouses next door to each other on the property, so all three of you could stay there. I know at least one has three bedrooms.”

“Are Laird and Sorcha okay with this?” I asked.

“They are,” Noah answered.

I joined my mom and sister outside and presented the idea to them.

“It’s your sister’s decision,” said my mom.

“Luisa?”

“When can we leave?” she asked.

“I would think right away.”

“Okay.” She got up to go inside.

“Did she tell you what happened?” my mom asked.

“I have a feeling it had something to do with Beau Barrett, and before you say anything, I don’t think it’s what this is really about. Luisa needs to feel in control of her own life. At the same time, she’s more fragile than she appears. My plan is to respect her wishes as best I can while, at the same time, keeping her grounded.”

“I appreciate all you do for us, baby.”

I hugged her. “I know you do, Mom.”
