RIDGE

“Iwish she’d stay here,” said Press when Sera went outside.

“Butler Ranch is the perfect alternative.”

“I know.” He shook his head.

“I get it, Press. Your protector instincts are on high alert, and it’s hard to turn it off.”

“I wish my brother’s were,” he muttered.

“Beau didn’t do anything wrong.”

Press shrugged. “Luisa responded to him. He could’ve been more sensitive.”

I disagreed, but there was no point in arguing about it.

“She’s here.”

“If you mean Daphne, yeah, I know. She and Beau helped me with something late yesterday afternoon.”

“I mean here at Seahorse.”

“Again, Press, Beau did nothing wrong, and neither did Daphne.”

“And yet, Luisa is leaving.”

“She’ll be safe at Butler Ranch, and you know it. Besides, there aren’t two more nurturing people than Laird and Sorcha.”

The French doors opened, and Luisa came inside. Sera and her mom followed a minute later.

“My mom is helping get Luisa’s things together. My sister has agreed with your suggestion.” She turned to Press. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for my sister. I can never repay your kindness.”

My eyes met Press’, and I cocked my head.

“Right,” he said to me before looking at Sera. “You are more than welcome, and there is nothing to repay. Your sister’s well-being is all I care about.”

I cleared my throat.

“Right,” he repeated. “Would you excuse us?” Press said to me.

“Sure. I’ll be in the other room.” I sincerely hoped Press was offering Sera the apology I’d told him she deserved.

I was looking out at the ocean when I heard footsteps behind me. “All set?” I asked when I turned around and saw Luisa and her mother.

“Yes,” Luisa responded. “I’d like to leave as soon as possible.”

Sera walked out of the kitchen, and I was happy to see both she and Press were smiling.

“I’ll grab your bags,” I said at the same time Press offered to.

“We’ll both get them,” he said, going ahead of me.

When Sera followed, I realized she would have a bag too. “All good?” I asked.

“He apologized.”

“I was hoping he would.”
