SERAPHINA

“Everything okay?” Noah asked after I ended my call with Luisa.

“It’s all good. Press is there, and they’re having a late breakfast with my mom.”

“Speaking of breakfast. Do we have time to go to Huck’s?”

“If you hadn’t suggested it, I would have.”

When we arrived, there was one open table left. It was the same one we’d sat at the first morning when I threatened Brix and Los Caballeros and he’d walked out.

Like the time in between when we were here, Noah slid beside me onto the bench seat and leaned over to kiss my forehead.

“Two Cajun omelets today, or are you lovebirds mixing it up?” asked Barb when she brought two cups of coffee to the table without our asking.

“Works for me,” I said.

“Me too,” Noah added.

“You shoulda ordered pancakes, kids, cuz your syrupy sweetness is overflowing,” she said as she walked away.

“I can’t help it. I’m deliriously happy.”

“So am I.” Noah leaned over to kiss me again, this time on the lips.

“Hey, Mad-man, look who’s here.”

When I opened my eyes, I saw Alex and her husband, Maddox, walking toward us. He was carrying their baby. Alex slid onto the bench seat across from us, and Maddox pulled up a chair.

“Mornin’,” he said, holding out one hand to shake Ridge’s. I waved, and both he and the baby waved back.

“So, how goes it?” Alex asked, wiggling her eyebrows.

I laughed. “It goes pretty great.”

“Seems like it. I’m really happy for you both,” she said, looking first at Noah, then at me.

“I asked Sera to marry me,” he blurted.

“And?”

“I said yes.”

Alex clapped her hands and reached out for Coco. “I’d say mimosas are in order, wouldn’t you?”

“I sure would,” said Maddox, standing and motioning to Barb, who moments later, brought five glasses, a carafe of orange juice, and a bottle of sparkling wine.

“Thanks, but I don’t think she’s old enough to join us yet,” said Alex, bouncing the baby on her knee.

Barb picked up a glass, poured it half full with wine, then added the OJ. She brought the glass to her lips and guzzled the whole thing. “Cheers!” she said, walking away and taking the glass with her.

When we drovethrough the ranch gates and past the main house, Luisa and my mom were sitting on the bench outside the cottage’s front door.

“Hey,” I said, walking over and kissing my sister’s cheek after we got out of the car. “Where’s Press?”

“He had to go. Something about being summoned to spend the afternoon with his mother.”

“Speaking of being summoned, I’m supposed to help Sorcha and Bradley with tonight’s dinner,” said my mom, standing and kissing my cheek like I had Luisa’s. When she walked away, I took her seat on the bench.
