“I figured that was what would take the most time. You don’t seem like a high-maintenance kind of woman.”

“Is that a jab at my outfit last night?”

“What about your outfit? I thought you looked stunning.”

I raised a brow, wondering if he was being sarcastic, but it didn’t seem like he was.

“Say thank you, Seraphina. It shouldn’t render you speechless when I give you a compliment.”

“Thank you, Noah. Oh, does it bother you when I call you that? You said everyone else calls you Ridge.”

“My mother calls me Noah. And no, I’ve decided I kind of like it when you do too.”

“Do I remind you of your mother?”

“Not in the least. I’ll see you in a half hour.”

“Wait—oh, never mind.”

“What?”

“I was going to give you the address.”

He laughed. “Bye, Seraphina.”

I left my mother a note, letting her know I’d be gone most of the afternoon but asking her to call me when she got in. Then raced over to my apartment, not remembering what kind of shape I’d left it in last night in my haste to get to the fundraiser. At the very minimum, I knew there were things scattered on my bathroom counter.

While I shouldn’t care what Noah thought about my tidiness, I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was a slob. One benefit of living in a studio apartment was no matter how bad it was, it wouldn’t take me long to straighten it.

It had been less difficult for me to figure out what to wear last night than it was today. The weather was warm for this time of year, but the breeze off the Pacific Ocean was always chilly. Not to mention, the area where we were going was rocky, without a lot of flat surfaces to sit on.

Shortly after I’d finished cleaning up the messes I’d made, I heard a knock.

After checking the peephole, I opened the door. Once I had, I wasn’t sure if I should invite Noah in. Was there really any reason to? “Um, ready?” I asked.

“Sure, but you might want to bring a jacket.”

“It’s right here.” I reached over and grabbed it. Noah took a step back, and I locked the door behind me. “Are you sure returning to See Canyon is okay?”

“Absolutely. It’s one of my favorite places.”

“Mine too.”

“On our way, I’ll give you an update on the search for your sister.”

“Wow. Already? Great.”

He ran down the list of things he and his friends, as he’d referred to them, had done so far.

“We were able to get into her cell phone, although her last known location was from the day she disappeared.”

“How were you able to get a warrant for her cell phone records so fast?”

He looked over at me. “Probably best if you don’t ask about certain things.”

“Understood.” It was a word he’d used earlier, and it seemed fitting.

“If there’s anything I think you should know, I won’t hesitate to tell you.”
