I held up my hand. “Say no more. I will not question your methodologies.”

“You know Zin Oliver, right?”

I looked at him with a raised brow.

“Of course you do. For him, sometimes, it’s best if he doesn’t know certain things, either.”

“As an officer of the court.”

Noah nodded. “Exactly.”

“Got it.”

“Two of the guys went by the university, but they’ll go back again on Monday when there are more students there.”

When he pulledup to the same place he had last night, I saw someone was building a house right below where he’d parked.

“That’s a shame,” I muttered.

He reached into the backseat and pulled out an actual picnic basket. “What is?”

I waved my arm. “Soon, the view will be gone.”

“Not for whoever lives there.”

I couldn’t justify my reaction, but that what I’d considered “my spot” would soon be gone pissed me off. I was about to say something about how the rich always spoiled everything, but bit my tongue. He was rich and could probably afford to buy property anywhere he wanted to.

“Maybe the owner will invite you over.”

I practically snorted. “Fat chance of that,” I mumbled.

“Come on. Let’s check it out.”

He motioned me down the driveway I hadn’t been able to see last night.

“We’re trespassing.”

“It’ll be okay.”

“But—”

Before I could put my foot in my mouth, so to speak, Noah walked up to the door, entered something into the keypad right above the handle, and it opened.

“Of course this is your house,” I muttered, feeling like an idiot. It wasn’t something I felt often, except when I was around Noah Ridge. I couldn’t say why, either.

“I should’ve said something right away, but I was interested in your reaction.”

“So I’d look foolish?” Now, I wished I hadn’t suggested a stupid picnic. If we were at a restaurant in town, I could get up and leave like he’d left breakfast.

He set the basket down on the concrete where flooring hadn’t been put in yet and took a step closer to me.

“I’d never intentionally do or say something to make you feel foolish, Seraphina.”

“Why, then?”

“Honestly? I thought you’d give me some shit about it.”

“That’s what you were hoping for? You’re weird.” My breath caught when Noah brushed my hair away from my face. His hand felt so big, yet he was so gentle. I remembered when he’d picked me up and put me in his truck last night, thinking he could easily circle my waist with them.
