“My kind of woman,” his voice muttered behind her.

She was quick on her feet as she kept her focus. Her eyes had to dart at every angle until she found a new spot.

“Two minutes.” An automated voice spoke over the speaker. The time was running out.

She quickly moved again until she spotted Max looking the other direction and got him in the back.

“Son of a bitch!” He turned and saw it was hers. “Tab!”

She snickered as she continued to walk across the floor and around the walls. She dropped low before taking the ramp back down, trying to make sure nobody would see her initially.

“Not so fast.” Luke’s voice spoke calmly.

She quickly spun on her heels and hit him again before smiling. “You seem to be getting your ass handed to you, Luke.”

The buzzer sounded, and everyone made their way out of the room. They paused at the scoreboard outside of the room as they hung up the vests with attached guns to see how everyone scored. It appeared she got hit the least, twice. She also got the only two hits on Luke and couldn’t help but laugh at that.

The group partially separated after that. Teaming up for bowling, arcade games, and sitting together to eat. It was the perfect distraction.

CHAPTER30

ARCHIE

“What?” He couldn’t have possibly heard her right.

“I said, I’m ready to go home after this. If this weekend has taught me anything, it’s that I can’t live my life in fear. Archie, I have a life to live. No matter what it throws my way, it’s mine.”

It had been a boring night while they were away. When everyone got back and went straight to bed, he thought it would continue to be a nice and quiet evening. Matt had taken over in the security office as soon as Tabitha said she needed to speak with Archie.

This wasn’t what he was expecting to hear. He didn’t know what it would be. Maybe something about another meet up like this being planned. He didn’t think she’d want to go home, not yet.

He leaned against the wall in the small hall where they were talking. “It’s ultimately your decision.”

“Yes, but I do want your input on my safety. So, if there’s something we can improve security wise, let me know.” She crossed her arms.

“Your house is secure and armed if needed. I think it comes down to the front gate. The neighborhood security is shit. There’s also the matter of the woods your neighborhood is backed up to. It’s not well lit on that back fence. I put up cameras, but I’m only one guy. If we can have someone specifically keeping an eye on the extra cameras, that should work. Until we get him.”

She nodded. “Okay. We’ve got more work tomorrow and then I’m going to request a change of flights for the next morning. We’ll talk more tomorrow.” She yawned.

“Okay.” He felt like an ass. “Did you have fun tonight?”

She looked surprised that he asked. “Yeah. Yeah, I did. Thanks.” She chewed on her bottom lip and wanted to pull her in close again. “Good night, Arch.”

“Night, Tab.” He watched her walk up the stairs before returning to the security office.

Matt was standing in the doorway. “Dude, call it a night. You can pick it up in the morning. I got this.” He turned and closed the door on him.

Sleep was the farthest thing from his mind, but he knew he needed some. When he reached the top of the staircase, the sight in front of him was something he wasn’t expecting. Tabitha was standing in the hall talking to the same guy from earlier.

Luke.

They were laughing at something, then she went into his room and pulled the door closed behind her. His head grew light as his chest tightened. She’d already moved on? That wasn’t like Tabitha at all.

His room was between theirs. He better not hear a fucking sound or he was going to kick the door down. He all but slammed his door shut before falling face first on the bed.

Fuck this.
