He droppedher bag off near the door of her room before taking his further down the hall. They hadn’t said many words to one another since the night she told him she wanted to go home. Now, here they were.

Matt was updating the camera software and encrypting something so they could have access at the main office. It was the only thing he could think of to do if she wanted to be home. It’s not like they could take over her home. He hoped they never had a reason to.

Aaron was home for the day and then out on another trip tomorrow. Tyler was responding to more requests and working on getting a few more to join their small group of four. They couldn’t trust just anyone, so it would probably take some time.

Tabitha laughed behind him and he turned to see her looking at her screen before taking it into her room. What was so funny?

He didn’t waste any time in his room before heading downstairs to the little security office he’d set up. He watched the cameras to see what Tabitha was doing. She came out of her room eventually and went into the living room. She put on some sort of virtual reality headset and earphones.

“Can you hear me?” Her voice came across.

“Yes! I love that one.” Pause. “Okay.” She laughed at something someone said. “Yes, I know where that is.”

He watched on the screen as she moved around part of her living room. Her arms moved about with controllers in hand. She was definitely in a world different from his. He’d seen her this weekend with her friends, in her element. Regardless if they were just work friends, they had more in common with her than he did.

Archie didn’t even know what he was doing here anymore. When he initially took this assignment, it was for selfish reasons. He wanted to be closer to her. They’d gotten close and then he pushed her away.

Should he have even taken this assignment? It wasn’t like they were friends anymore. They were living separate lives and had been for a while. He considered asking Tyler to have someone else take over.

He groaned and closed his eyes. This was more difficult than he expected.

Archie wasn’t sure how much time as he mindlessly watched the screens before she stepped into the doorway.

“Hey.” She shuffled her feet slightly. “We’re going out tomorrow night.”

“What’s going on?” He rolled back in his chair to face her.

“I have a date.”

The fuck she did.

“I’m meeting him at the restaurant, so we can ride together if you’d prefer.” Her eyes looked around the room before settling back on him. “So, yeah.” She turned and walked away.

What the fuck was happening? How could she go out on a date at a time like this? Didn’t she realize how dangerous it was with her ex waiting to make a move? He kicked the trash can over and groaned before leaning over to pick it back up.

CHAPTER31

TABITHA

There was an empty feeling in the pit of her stomach, and she hadn’t been able to sit still the whole day. It was all leading up to this moment. When was the last time she was even on a date? Was it good or bad that she was feeling this way?

She knew she needed to move on. It wasn’t that she was ready for anything serious, but a good time with a good guy might be nice.

When she met Luke Keller in person last weekend for the first time, it was exactly as she thought it would be. He was good looking and there was some chemistry there. They’d been online friends in the cosplay community for over a year. They’d always kept their conversations strictly professional. Some of the videos bordered on flirty in the last few months, but that was just them growing their audiences.

From what they could tell, people loved it. They were shipping them. There was a debate going on in the comments if they should beTabukeorLutha. It was a little weird and intimidating. She didn’t think anything would come of it, not when she wasn’t looking.

Then yesterday while they were playing virtual role-playing games with several other friends, he asked her out… in front of everyone. She couldn’t exactly say no. Not that she would’ve if he’d asked her out in private. At least, she didn’t think so.

Archie had been in an even sourer mood today. She almost asked him if they needed to get someone else to take over. It wasn’t like she wanted him here in the first place.

She blew out a breath as she approached the table in the restaurant.

“Hey!” Luke smiled as he stood and moved around the table.

He pulled out her chair for her and then handed her a rose.

“It’s pretty, thank you.” She sat, and he slid the chair back in. “This place is nice.”
