“I would be thrilled,” he said. “Surprised, but thrilled.”

I swallowed hard. “And if it’s negative?”

He shrugged. “Then we decide what we want to do next. It’s not a big deal—you’re young and I’m very sure that my dick works just fine, so there’s no rush.”

On the counter, my phone timer chirped, and I reached out toward the stick and picked it up, silently reading the results. I looked up at Clive with wide eyes, and couldn’t help the tears that spilled out of them. He wiped them away with the broad pads of this thumbs, whispering nonsense as he pulled me close.

“It’s negative,” I sniffled. “I don’t know why I’m crying, isn’t that good news?”

“Frankie,” Clive said. “Sweetheart.” He pulled back and looked me in the eye. “Did you want it to be positive? Do you want to have my baby?”

I just shrugged and swiped at the tears that dripped down my cheeks. “I didn’t think much about it until today, and when I thought I might be, suddenly it seemed—I don’t know, like the most precious thing in the world. Something I needed so badly and didn’t even know it until today. I wanted it, and I wanted it with you.”

His arms went around me again and I sobbed against his shoulder as he gently rubbed my back.

“We can have a baby whenever you want, Frankie,” he rumbled. “I love you so much, and when you’re ready, I’m ready, whether it’s tomorrow or in five years.”

I pulled back and reached up to run my fingers through his short, thick hair and down through his beard, before my hand came to rest on the solid muscle above his heart. The muscle thump-thumped against my palm, and I savored how warm and alive he felt, how strong and present.

He’d worked so hard to be the person he wanted to be, to repair relationships and grow as a person. I wanted desperately to have a family with him, to provide my children with a father who was strong enough to admit his faults and seek help for them. His eyes shone with love for me, and I felt my heart thud in my chest at the force of my feelings for him.

“Now,” I finally said. “Tomorrow. Today. I want a family, and I want it with you.”

He blinked, and a slow smile spread across his lips. “Really?”

I nodded. “I had a big family, and that’s what I want for my own kids.”

“Well in that case,” Clive said, leaning forward to drop a hot, hungry kiss on my mouth as his strong hands surrounded my waist with heartbreaking gentleness, pulling me close into the shelter of his big body, “Let’s start right now.”
