“You’re not,” he says, but there’s no doubt. Ava looks exactly like Noah—no one would ever question it.

Jean-Pierre snaps out of his daze and spins around, fury dancing in his eyes.

“You fucking whore!” he shouts and grabs for me. I back up against the wall, unable to get away from him. I nearly trip over the chair that’s on its side.

Noah grabs Jean-Pierre by the collar and yanks him back. He drives him against the opposite wall, hands in fists around his leather jacket.

“I suggest you leave before something gets broken,” he says in a calm voice. His eyes fill with warning, and Jean-Pierre gets that shit’s about to go down if he doesn’t get out. When Noah lets go of him, Jean-Pierre spits toward me.

“This isn’t done,” he says. “We’re not through. You can’t drag around a bodyguard forever.”

He leaves the kitchen, and a moment later, the front door slams.

I sag against the wall and sink to the floor, and tears fill my eyes.

Noah comes to me and kneels in front of me.

“Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

I shake my head. “If you didn’t come when you did…how did you find me?”

“Michelle gave me the address.”

“Traitor,” I cry, the tears rolling freely, now, but I’m so relieved Noah is here.

“It’s okay,” Noah says softly, brushing away my tears with his thumb. “You’re okay, now.”

“You know about Ava,” I say through my tears.”

Noah nods.

“And you’re still here.”

He nods again. “I told you, babe. I’m not going anywhere.”

Chapter 28

Noah

Raven lifts a cup of sweet tea to her lips with a shaky hand. After running the son of a bitch who harassed her off, I made her a cup of tea with sugar in hopes of calming her a bit.

So far, it doesn’t look like it’s working.

“What are you doing here?” Raven asks.

“I came to see you. I don’t want to let you go.” My words are simple, straightforward. I don’t want a life without Raven anymore.

“You know about Ava,” she says softly. “How did you find out?”

“Michelle told me.”

Her face changes from shock to anger. Before she opens her mouth to speak, I put my hand on hers.

“I’m glad she did.”

“I didn’t want you to know,” she says. Her voice is trembling now, too. She looks like she’s going to cry.

“Why not? I’m her father, Raven. If I’d known…God, you wouldn’t have had to do this all alone. And I know it might be five years too late, but I don’t want you to do it alone now. Not anymore. I’m here, and I’m not leaving.”
