“Yeah, I closed the doors for tonight, so it’s just us.”

“Really?”

“Perks of being the owner,” Mason says with a grin. “We have the kitchen staff at our beck and call, and we can eat anything we want.”

“Anything?” Kylie asks, excited. “Like…dessert before supper?”

I laugh. “Let’s not get too crazy.”

Kylie pouts but then she shrugs and laughs it off.

“I do have a surprise for you, though,” Mason says.

A moment later, the door opens, and Jenna runs in. Hanna follows.

“Jenna!” Kylie cries out, and the two girls hug. “What are you doing here?”

“Sorry we’re a little late,” Hannah says.

“Perfect timing,” Mason says and smiles at Hannah. “The chef is ready for the girls, now.”

“For what?” Kylie asks.

“You’re making your own pizza tonight,” Mason says.

When the girls squeal, and Mia takes them to the kitchen, Hannah laughs.

“You’ve made her night. Hell, her whole year.” She smiles at me. “How are you feeling?”

“I want this baby out, now,” I admit. “I’m tired of being pregnant, and I can’t wait to meet the little one.”

“Girl or boy?” Hannah asks.

I glance at Mason, who beams.

“Another girl,” he says.

When he says it like that, it makes me melt. It’s only been months since he’s met Kylie, but he treats her as his daughter and refers to her as his daughter. He’s been there for her as a father figure since we were a green light. Now, when we talk about the baby and Kylie’s little sister, she doesn’t talk about neither of them having a father. She talks aboutbothof them having a father.

And it makes me feel incredible to know that Mason is so invested.

“We’ll have her ready tomorrow morning for you,” Mason says.

Hannah says her goodnights, pops her head into the kitchen to say goodbye to Jenna, and then she leaves.

When she’s gone, I turn to Mason.

“You’re really amazing, do you know that?”

Mason laughs. “I thought it would be nice for Kylie to have a friend to keep her busy tonight. And the chef is great with kids.”

“You’regreat with kids.”

“Good, because we’re about to have another one.”

“I love that you talk about her as your daughter. Kylie, I mean.”

Mason gets serious. “I see her as my daughter. I know I’ll never replace David. And I don’t want to. But when she graduates, I’ll be there cheering just as hard for her as he would have. And when she gets married, I’ll be there with her on my arm, so she can have it all. She deserves that.”
