She starts to walk away but I grab her arm.

“Let me go!” she cries out.

“You’re lying to me,” I say.

She yanks her arm back, her anger increasing. Her eyes sew fire and she’s so fucking beautiful. I won’t let her go, not unless she has a valid reason.

“I’m not,” she gasps. “You can’t tell me what I think and say and—”

“I know you want this,” I cut her off. “You can’t tell me you don’t. Something else is going on, and until I know what it is, I’m not letting you throw this away.”

“There’s nothing to throw away—we barely know each other.”

“We belong together, Natalie. You know it and I know it, and fighting it is wrong.”

She’s angry, but that’s not all I see. She looks panicked.

“Tell me what’s going on,” I say. “Tell me why you’re freaking out so we can deal with this. Together.”

“I’m not freaking out,” she counters, but she looks more and more like she’s going to cry, the fire draining from her eyes, replaced with something vulnerable. When I take her hand, she snatches it back. “I just can’t do this.”

“Can’t, or won’t?” I ask.

“Does it matter?”

“If you can’t do this, we’ll figure out how you can. But if youwon’t, I can’t stop you from walking away.”

She tries to glare at me but fails. Instead, her lip trembles slightly.

“Natalie,” I say. “What is it?” I take a step closer to her, but she backs away from me.

“I can’t!” She cries out. “And you won’t change that. Being with you is exactly the problem.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It doesn’t have to! I know what I want. You can’t change my mind.”

“Tell me you don’t want me,” I challenge her. “Tell me you want to walk away.”

“Mason—”

“Say it,” I insist. “If you tell me you don’t want me, then fine. I’ll let it go. But you can’t walk away saying this is all a mistake. Because your reasons are bullshit.”

“They’re not!”

“Tell me you don’t want me,” I say again. I’m furious at her for doing this. If she wants out, I won’t force her to say. I just don’t believe it’s all that simple.

She shakes her head.

“You can’t say it,” I say. “Because it’s not true. Youdowant this.”

“I don’t.”

“I don’t believe you. You’re not—”

“I can’t lose you too!” she cries out and bursts into tears. “If I fall for you and I lose you, I won’t survive it.” Her voice trembles as she talks, tears flowing down her cheeks. “I can’t do this,” she adds in a whisper.

“Oh, Natalie,” I say and wrap my arms around her. This time, she doesn’t push me away, or pull back or try to leave.
