“Take this.” He handed her the large towel.

She wrapped herself in it and sat on the bench.

Finn put on his clothes, straight on his dripping skin. “Used to it,” he said with a smile when she looked at him.

“To having sex in the pool?”

He laughed. “No. To put my clothes back on without toweling off.” He then sat on the bench next to her. “That was actually my first time.”

She pivoted toward him all at once. “You don’t have to lie for my benefit, Finn Brennen.” She chuckled.

“No, seriously. I sometimes swim naked when there’s no one around, but I’ve never had sex in the pool before. Who would I have it with?”

She pressed her lips together and raised her eyebrows in a I’m-impressed expression. “Not even in college?”

“Especially not in college. We were always practicing, everyone together, not a moment to lose. It was all about breaking records, making times, getting to the next level.”

“Oh, wow! I’m … honored to be your first.”

“Wouldn’t want it to be anyone else.”

His phone was on the bench behind her. She handed it to him. “Do you want to check?”

Finn nodded once, inhaled deeply, then took it from her.

She watched as he swiped and read over a few messages. Her heart thumped in anticipation. She wiped her wet face and absorbed the droplets from her hair as she nervously waited for his update.

Finn raised his gaze from the device and looked at her. He then smiled wide. “My lawyer texted, too. Three hours ago. Said I’ll pay double for having him work on New Year’s Eve.”

“What else did he say?”

“She motioned for mediation instead of battling this. And the best thing—she withdrew her request to change Max’s physical custody. He can continue living with me. She just wants mediation to ensure she can have him not just on weekends, as if this wasn’t the case until now anyway.”

“Oh, Finn! I’m so relieved! And happy!” She hugged him, and he enveloped her in his arms, rubbing his palms on her towel-covered back.

“Now I can start the new year, with you,” he said into her neck.

Finn scooped her up and sat her on his lap, circling his arms around her.

She raked her fingers through his wet hair. “I’m sorry Max had to go through this. We heard from Darian that they had an argument on Christmas.”

“Yeah. It was rough, but she brought it on herself. I only wish she didn’t bring it on him, too. It was good we had plans right after. Max was so happy these last few days. And he loved visiting Noah and Jill.”

“Yeah, I heard you took him to see them. That was so good of you.”

He locked his eyes on her. “Because I want a family, Jane, and I want it with you.”

“I want it all, too.”

He kissed her. They both smelled of chlorine now.

“We should start working on one soon,” he half-whispered against her lips.

She smiled, still not grasping this happiness. “Don’t you think we should take it slow?”

“Slower than fourteen years?”
