“No. I don’t want you to tell him.”

“Honey, he’s going to want to know.”

“I doubt it. Anyway, it’s over between us. Please, Travis.”

“Fuck. He’ll kill me.”

“No. He wanted me out of his hair.”

“He’s just trying to protect you, honey.”

“I’m tired. Can we talk about this later?”

“Yes.” Travis pulled into the ER and jumped out. “We have a gunshot wound here,” he yelled.

Several people raced out with a gurney. The car door was opened, and they carefully lifted her out.

Her eyelids started to droop even as she fought to keep them open.

“Hell, this is Dr. Powell’s daughter.”

“Someone get her mom on the phone.”

She wanted to yell no, but she was fading fast.

She felt the blanket taken from her. Then she heard several curses.

“Get some type-O blood up here. She’s lost too much.”

Her clothes were cut off her. The last thing she heard was someone yelling for something, and then she let the darkness take her, hoping it would help with the pain.

Chapter Eighteen

Anna heard a beeping sound and opened her eyes. The room was dark except for the light above her. She knew she was in the hospital, and then she remembered why.

She tried not to think of the fact she’d never see Zachary again. It was too painful.

“Hey, you’re awake.”

She turned her head to see Travis. “What are you still doing here?”

He snorted. “I thought we had become friends, Anna.”

“You have to be Zachary’s friend, and you can’t be both.”

“I think that’s bullshit.”

“Go home. They’ll take care of me.”

“Are you going to live with your mother?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“You can come to stay with Nina and me. I’d love for the two of you to meet.”

“I just don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t want to mess up your friendship with him.”

“When he finds out I took you to the ER because you were shot and I didn’t tell him, it will piss him off, and he may not forgive me.”
