Now she felt horrible. “Can you wait two days to tell him?”

“Why two days?”

“Because I won’t be here anymore.”

“You don’t know that for sure, honey.”

“I’m pretty sure.”

“You lost a lot of blood.”

“But I’m already getting better. Just two days. Please promise me.”

“Fine, but I guarantee shit will hit the fan when he finds out.”

“And I say it won’t. I’m very tired. Why don’t you go home to your woman?”

“Will you call me when you decide where you’ll be?”

“Yes.”

He bent over the bed and kissed her forehead. “I’ll see you soon.”

“Bye. Thank you for everything.”

She couldn’t decipher the expression on his face before he walked out. Tears started to fall, and she did nothing to stop them. The pain was so great that it sometimes took her breath.

How could he do that to her? She thought he really cared about her.

She hadn’t known she’d fallen asleep again until the door opened and her mom walked in.

“God,” Patricia, her mother, said and walked over to stand next to the bed. “I just about had a heart attack when I got the call.”

“I’m sorry, Mother.”

“Tell me what happened.”

She told her mother everything except the personal feelings she had for Zachary. Those were private.

“I’m just glad you’re okay.” Patricia patted her arm. “I’m so sorry I tried to make you into something I know you hated. I think it was silly. I thought if you were in the medical field with me, you’d never leave me.”

“Mom, I won’t ever leave you.”

“Will you come home from here?”

“I’m not sure.”

“I bought a condo close to the hospital.”

“Why?”

“Because I hate being in that huge house. Even when you were there, it still had so many memories.”

“I like the memories. I hope I never forget them.”

“Neither of us will,” Patricia said. “I can come home and help take care of you.”

Anna shook her head. “The wound is superficial. They just worried about the blood loss. I’ll be out of here tomorrow, and I’ll have all the servants at home if I need something.”
