He turned to me and put his hands on my arms. “Are you okay, Norah? Do you want me to call your mom?” Concern filled his eyes. He glanced at the patio door. “I’m going to check on the boys.” He pulled a cup from the sink and filled it with water. “Sit down and drink this. I’ll be back.”

I nodded and sat at the island in the middle of the kitchen. I held the glass with two hands so I didn’t drop it and took a drink. I heard the muffled sound of Mr. Jones talking to the boys and soon he came back inside. He stood across from me at the island.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

By now the trembling had stopped. “I’m okay. Thank you for coming home when you did. Who knows how far he would have taken that.”

He ran his fingers through his combed back hair, messing it up some. “I don’t even want to think about what would have happened to you, Norah. And with my boys just outside. You need to stop seeing him.”

“Oh, I don’t plan on ever talking to him again much less seeing him. You don’t have to worry about that.”

“What did you ever see in him anyway?” He leaned forward on the counter towards me.

I shrugged. “He’s been asking me out forever and I finally agreed to get my mind off of the guy I really liked.” I looked him in the eye, wanting to tell him he was the guy I really liked.

“I see.” He rubbed the back of his neck with his hand and turned away.

“It’s you,” I said softly. I waited for him to reply or turn around but he didn’t. “You’re the guy I really like.”

“Norah…”

“Stop, Mr. Jones. Just stop. I know you’re a teacher and I know you’re older than me. I don’t care. I’ve never liked guys my age. I’m eighteen now. You’re not even one of my teachers. I don’t see the big deal. And don’t think I don’t notice the way you look at me too.”

I don’t know what made me so bold as to confess this all to him. I guess I really had nothing to lose.

What was I going to do with her? I know what I wanted to do with Norah. I wanted to kiss her and then bend her over the kitchen counter to fuck her brains out.

Walking in and seeing that asshole wrapped around her, touching her, made me want to punch the wall. Then I heard her protests and I saw red. He’s lucky I didn’t kick the shit out of him.

I turned around to look at Norah. Her hair was down around her face and her eyes were bright with unshed tears. I started to walk toward her when her phone rang. She glanced at it.

“Shit. It’s my mom. She’s probably wondering where I am. We were going to go out to dinner for my birthday.”

She picked up her phone and walked out of the kitchen. I grabbed a beer from the fridge, opened it, and took a long drink. I really needed something stronger than beer after the events of the evening so far, but I had the boys to look after.

Norah came back in and gathered her things. “My mom is going to be here any minute. I told her I don’t feel like doing anything but she’s insisting.”

“You only turn eighteen once,” I smiled at her.

“I’d rather stay and talk to you.”

I clutched the beer in my hand, taking everything that was in me to not go touch her. “We can talk soon. I promise.”

“I wish you were coming to my party. Although I don’t feel much like partying anymore.”

“Don’t let that stupid guy ruin your fun. He’s not worth it.”

She nodded in agreement and there was a honk from the driveway. “It’s Mom. Gotta go.” She smiled wistfully as she walked out the door. I watched her walk to the car, waving at her mom.

When they were finally out of sight, I went outside by the boys. Norah was never far from my mind though. I didn’t know how I was going to handle this situation. I had feelings for her too and she was an adult.

I decided to call up my best friend Chuck after the kids were in bed. He always had sage advice for me.

“What’s up man? How’s the new job? How are my boys?” He asked when he answered the phone.
