I laughed and shook my head. “It's fine. I don't mind. I think it’ll be fun even.”

“You do not have to go to this hospital fundraiser. I wasn’t going to go anyway. And now for sure I’m not.” She was shaking her head adamantly, her ponytail moving side to side.

I shook my head. “Oh, no. We're going. If you want to play this up, and let him think that you moved on, then we have to do this.”

She sighed. “I have moved on. I have no interest in being with him anymore. But he did really piss me off. We were dating for a few months and I caught him in the break room with thatnurse.” She was waving her hands around and she talked and I found her so adorable.

“You mean the hydrogen peroxide blonde bimbo with the fake boobs?” I snorted. “What a fool. You are way better than her. You're more beautiful. Classier.”

She smiled. “Thank you but you really don't have to do this.”

I closed my laptop to give her my full attention. “No, I want to. It'll be fun. We'll have fun together. No pressure. I promise I'll keep the PDA to a minimum.” I winked and she laughed, crossing her long legs in front of me. I couldn't wait to see her dressed up.

“Are you sure? You don't want to get dressed up and hang out with a bunch of stuffy hospital people do you?”

“Well, when you put it that way, but I would like to get dressed up and hang out with you.” I didn't want to tell her that. I was already developing a crush on her. She caught my eye that night at the carnival and she'd been on my mind ever since. I thought about her constantly and wanted to ask her out, but just couldn't get up the nerve. This was the perfect excuse to spend some time with her.

“Well, if you insist. I mean, maybe it'll be fun.” She shrugged her shoulders.

“It will be. I promise we will have a blast.” I made a vow right then and there to myself to make sure she had the best time ever and wouldn't regret making me her fake boyfriend. “After that night, I don't have to be your boyfriend anymore, but you can show him what a good time you're having with your new sexy photographer boyfriend.”

She laughed. “Good idea.”

“So what's on your agenda for today?” I asked her.

“Well, I have the day off and I was gonna go to the park but now that those two are headed that way, I think I'll skip it.”

“Okay.” I sat back and crossed my arms over my chest. “Well, how about I take you around, so use some non-touristy places? Have you had a chance to explore much?”

She shook her head. “No, not really. I mainly work.”

“Well, that settles it.” I slipped my laptop in my bag. “We're going to hang out today. I'm going to take you to some gems only local people know and then we're going to catch dinner at the greasiest, dirtiest pub. We're going to have some fish and chips and you'll never be the same.”

She nodded and agreed. “Sounds good.”

The rest of the day with Vanessa was perfect. It was a gorgeous day which was rare in England. It hadn't rained all day and the sun was shining. It was warm but not too humid. I took her around town, showing her some of my favorite places. At the end of the day, as promised, I took her to a little pub in my neighborhood. It was a hole in the wall and only had five booths but they had the best fish and chips in Notting Hill. We laughed and talked about our childhoods and our careers. I loved her American accent and found it so sexy, even though she insisted my British accent was sexy. I walked her home and we made plans for the hospital fundraiser in about a week. I gave her my number so she could text me the details. I couldn't wait to see her again.

I ended up talking to my brother later that night.

“You're going where? What? I don't understand what's happening. You have a girlfriend now?”

I laughed and ran my hands through my hair. “No. Well, yeah, I have a fake girlfriend, and I'm taking her to her hospital’s fundraiser.”

There was a pause on the other end before he replied, “A fake girlfriend?”

“Yeah, it's kind of a long story. I met her at the carnival. I saw her having coffee today. Her ex came in and she introduced me as her boyfriend. He mentioned something about the fundraiser and I told her I go because she's cute.”

He laughed. “You like her, don't you?”

“I do. I don't really know much, but what I do know is that I like her. I'm interested in getting to know her and being her pretend boyfriend for an evening wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.”

“Well, have fun and be careful. Don't get hurt.”

“I won't.” I hung up the phone and sat back in my chair. I would be careful not to get hurt this time. But Vanessa was gorgeous, smart, and funny. And I couldn't wait to spend the evening with her. Who knew where it would lead.
