Sunshine

Finally, I make it to the outside of town in a minute, even though it’s miles away. As a monster, speed isn’t an issue for me. The town is busy today with humans and shifters everywhere. It’s not the town belonging to the wolf shifters. It’s a few miles from that and this one has a lot of lower shifters that intermingle.

Inhaling deeply, I use all my magic left to shift into something remotely human. My limbs shrink with more pain than I wanted and the fur on my body disappears. Groaning, I rake a human hand through my shoulder length black hair. Blood drips down my arm from the wound. It looks worse as a human with huge claw marks deep through the white meat. After a moment of change, I move to the first store, Ted the Butcher’s.

The store—thank God—is empty of customers. The owner looks up at me, lips curling upwards, until his eyes land on the blood pooling in my sleeve.

“Are you okay?” Teddy asks, jumping over the counter. He scoops me from under my other arm that isn’t hurt and helps me towards the back of the house. The room is pure stainless steel because of all the animals he butchers in it. “What happened?”

I plop down on a chair, eyes rolling back. “Oh, the usual. The mountain lions threatened me.”

“Because you ate a shifter?”

“I think they knew I wouldn’t heal properly… They know I have a human with me.”

His eyes almost pop out of his head. “Why do you still have her around? Kick her out! What are you thinking?” He moves, opening a cabinet and pulls out a first aid kit.

I give a small growl, head tilting backwards.

He returns the growl. “Is this fucking human worth it? Either eat her or kick her out.”

My eyes find him. “I can’t.”

“Why?” He begins pouring some type of cleaning liquid on my wounds, making me hiss and sit up. Our dark eyes meet, his animal at his surface. I know he’s pissed. A monster like me doesn’t keep pets, especially not human ones.

“Because I like… having someone around.”

Teddy makes a noise that makes look around. “Ezekiel, the big bad monster, is enjoying a little annoying human’s company.”

I roll my eyes. “Don’t call her that.”

He scoffs, mopping the blood from my arm up. “Just imagine… if you ate that fucking human, you’d heal-”

“Well, it’s not going to happen, so drop it,” I snap, whirling around. My monster is always at the surface, wanting to break free back into true form.

He stares at me, laughing. “Holy fuck… Do you like this girl?”

I roll my eyes. “Just fix me up, Ted.”

“Ezekiel and a human sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.” he sings, teasing me. It’s so weird to have him go from telling me to eat her to teasing me. After he patches me up, I feel somewhat better. He spent the next few minutes cleaning up my blood that was on the table and floor. I take my time changing, knowing I’m going to need to get a few supplies from the stores around us.

“What’s her name?” Ted asks, breaking the silence.

I glance over at him. He’s hosing down the floors. The pink water circles the drain that is built into the room. This is where he butchers the animals. Yummy. “I don’t know. I haven’t asked.”

“Does she even know your name?”

I shrug. “She doesn’t need to.”

Ted scoffs. “I’m confused. You don’t want to eat her, but you don’t want to fuck her? Why do we have this human around?”

Rolling my eyes, I throw my pack back on my back. “Thank you for patching me up. I’ll pay you back with a good animal you can sell.”

Ted shrugs. “You caught a human instead of an animal.”

“Goodbye, Ted.”

“Hey, Zeke?”
