He moves in front of me. “Do you know how to speak, little lady?”

“Deer…” One of the humans whispers.

That’s my cue.

The shifter and I both look to see a gorgeous brown deer in the distance, eating the grass and leaves that are starting to bloom. Reaching behind my head, my finger brush the end of an arrow. The guy grabs his gun and I freeze.

“I have to use the arrow to shoot the deer…” I explain in a whisper.

He must be fucking new.

“Michael, take a step back,” one of the shifters says.

And the fucker in front of me listens.

I pull the arrow and load it into my bow, quickly before I’m killed for doing what my job is. It’s silent as I line up my fingers over the deer’s heart. It barely moves, not aware of us.

For a moment, it feels calm. The morning air is still, barely wrestling the leaves on the trees. The ash brown deer looks… innocent. His dark eyes darting down at the grass in front of him.

I almost didn’t want to shoot him.

But it’s either me or the deer and in this world, and I rather it be him.

Then I let the arrow fly from my fingertips. It flies through the air, whispering as it passes the trees and thuds as it lands between the rib cages of the deer.

Thud.

My heart hits my stomach when the creature goes down. My stomach rolls itself into a knot and I fight to keep the food down from breakfast.

The deer falls, but squirms to try to get away.

I swallow, lowering my bow. One of the guys finishes it off with a knife and then proceeds to carry it back. I hated this. I know we all eat meat, and we all get a small portion of what we catch but… I am forced to do this.

I can’t enjoy it when I’m forced.

“Good girl,” Michael whispers.

Biting on my inner cheek to not show my disgust, I move on.
