Killian doesn’t object, even though he’s normally not affectionate.

After a while, we move to the front and pay before leaving. Asura bumps me just as we make it outside. “Thanks,” she mutters, but I’m not exactly sure why she’s saying it.

Killian and his three hellhounds walk ahead of us. I know two of them, but the girl is new. She’s short compared to normal size hounds, and I can’t tell what her power is but I can tell she’s a hellhound. Killian seems to like her, flirting the whole time.

“How did you and Khaz become partners?” Asura breaks my train of thought.

I cock a brow, shoving my hands back in my pockets. “I wouldn’t call us partners.”

“What do you mean? I thought that the bond between a hellhound and the reaper was a partnership.”

I shrug. It didn’t feel like that. Khazon tells us what to do and we listen. Sometimes it’s fine, like telling us to protect Asura or to use my hell fire. But sometimes it’s something like don’t talk to certain people or don’t look at Miya for too long. He seems very insecure, and I can see why now.

Asura broke his heart.

I’m not exactly sure what happened to them before, but I can tell Khazon is hurt by it.

“Hopefully it changes for you. I think it should be more of a partnership than a mastership,” she says.

That will be a first for anyone. Reapers treat us like we are replaceable, which in a sense, we are. There are millions of hellhounds with all different types of powers. If I were to die right now, Khazon would replace me in a few days. It’s how it works.

Asura stares at the small car that we piled into before. The whole ride here she stayed close to me and away from Killian’s horny hellhounds.

“It’s a nice night, huh?” I say before looking up at the night sky.

The Shadow World is a carbon copy of Earth. Most of the buildings are built the same way, with the same millions of windows. There are cities and countries, but we are in one of the most known city areas. Parts of this city remind me of New York: huge skyscrapers, always alive at night, a million flashing signs to catch your attention. I wasn’t on Earth a lot in my life, only the few times my mother would take us. New York was my brother’s favorite place. He loved the various foods and all the different people we met.

Asura nods, looking up at the neon lights of the Japanese restaurant we were just in. For a moment, Asura reminds me of someone I once knew…Their long silver curls bouncing in the breeze that surrounded us. Their dark eyes lighting up in the shapes of the neon signs while their beautiful skin glows. But Asura’s is a deep golden honey. Her pink lips are full and look kissable…

I blink. I barely know this girl and here I am thinking about the ways I can bruise her lips. Her attitude… It just reminds me of… her. She was always so confident, always so witty and kept people smiling. Asura does the same thing.

Sadness washes over me.

I won’t let anything happen to her. “Can I walk you back? It’s like a fifteen-minute walk… it’s not far.” I finally ask.

Her eyes flicker to me as a smirk runs across her face. “I guess…Might as well.”

Killian looks up at us, waiting for us to move to the car.

“We are going to walk back. Don’t wait up.” I nod to them.

Killian cocks a brow, looking between me and his sister. “Don’t do anything stupid…”

Asura snorts. “I should say the same to you, Killie.”

His brows pull together.

My eyes move to Raven, his newest hound, who is getting in the driver’s seat. Killian catches on quickly, the ivory skin on his cheeks turning red. Killian’s skin is like his father’s, while Asura got blessed with her mother’s golden skin.

“Make sure you wrap it up,” she teases, punching his arm.

“Stop it,” he snaps for the first time, but even then, I can tell he’s not pissed. I’ve seen Killian mad, and I’ve seen how hard and cold he is in his demon form, but somehow Asura gets a different side of him. More affectionate.

“Bye, Killie!” Asura waves him off.

Killian mutters under his breath for her to “fuck off,”but I can see the smile on his lips.

Asura and I take our time walking to the academy. Her eyes always watch all the buildings surrounding us. I look down at her, watching her. “It’s almost more beautiful than it is on Earth,” she says with a small smile.
