Although we don’t have classes the next day, I still get up two hours before breakfast starts. I decided a morning run would be fun to burn off the sugary alcohol. Plus, what Inarian and Jigsaw keep saying is getting to me. Am I taking this as seriously as everyone else?

The campus is quiet during this hour of the morning. The people I do see pretend I’m not alive; that’s the way I like it. Afterwards, I do weightlifting in the gym. Halfway through my workout is when others start working out too. I finish before any of them can even talk to me.

My phone dings with a text just as I’m sipping my water, walking out of the gym.

Unknown number: We still have a deal?

I look around, trying to see if this is a joke.

Me: That deal is…?

Unknown number: That you kiss me when we are sober…

Me: Hazen? That wasn’t the deal.

Hazen: Oh… Must have forgotten. Anywho, can I be your hellhound?

Me: You actually remember that?

Hazen: Yes. And I can show you what I can do.

I bite my lip. I barely know this guy and I want to do nothing more than fuck him. But I need a hound, and our chemistry might help us in the bonding ceremony.

Me: Training yard in twenty minutes.

I push open the gym doors, passing by someone. A cold shiver runs up my arm, creating goosebumps in its wake. I glance back to see a familiar icy, dark glare look back at me.

“Got to get up earlier, Inari,” I tease.

“Don’t call me that,” he grumbles, walking inside.

Glancing back, I see him roll his broad shoulders to loosen them. My eyes wander to his nice ass in his sweats. Jesus, these hounds will be the death of me.

I make my way to the training field quicker than Hazen. I don’t have to wait long before the shirtless hound jogs my way.

“Good morning!” Hazen says with a smile. “Oh, why are you sweaty?”

I roll my eyes. “Good morning. I have questions. How good are you at fighting?”

He shrugs. “Ledger and I spar a lot, so I’d say I’m decent.” He stretches upwards to the sky with a groan and a few cracks of his bones. His muscles ripple and stretch with him.

“Would you be willing to teach me?”

He raises a brow.

“I can’t learn in that class. I’m only learning how Inarian fights. I need more training.”

He nods. “Yeah, I’d be willing to kick your ass a few times.”

I chuckle. “And your power is… electricity?”

He nods, moving to me and running a finger over the back of my hand. It shocks me enough to pull back with a gasp, and my nerves awaken in my body.

“How powerful is that?”

Hazen kneels, pressing a hand into the ground. White lightning bolts glow behind his tan skin and enters the ground from his palm. It rumbles the ground, bouncing between the roots of all the plants until it hits a tree that begins to spark.

I smirk. “Careful.”
