“Okay, cool… So, just ignore my fifty messages about me freaking out.”

Hazen picked up on something being wrong so easily. He might make a great partner for me.

“Are you going to be okay, princess?”

I smile. Hazen says it is so much sweeter than Ledger. I remember our kiss and how turned on he made me. “I… uh… have to go to call my other boyfriends.”

“Oh, so this isn’t just a reaper and hound relationship? Mhm… I thought you liked me by the way you smelled and—”

“Goodbye, Haze!” I cut him off.

“Text me, so I know you don’t die.”

“Don’t tell me what to do. I’ll die if I want to, fucker.”

He laughs as we hang up. I bite my lip, thinking maybe I should call him back and just talk to him. He did send me fifty text messages. How insane?

My phone rings, making me look down to see “Ledge” on the caller ID.

“Hello?”

“How dare you call him first when I am more worried than he is?” he teases.

“Why are you worried?”

He stops speaking, and I hear Hazen laugh in the background. So, they are together.

“I’m fine, thank you for checking in on me.”

“Yeah,” he says. “You’re welcome. I’m, uh, probably going to see you later.”

“Huh?”

He sighs. “The king invited us to dinner... Khazon and his hounds.”

I throw myself back on the bed. “Ugh. How fun.”

“Tell me about it.”

I have so much to say and ask but how do I even start. Do you hate me? Our conversations have never been like this. We are always talking about something, and it is never quiet or dull.

“I’m glad to know you’re okay. Uh… See you later, okay?”

“Mhm, Bye, Ledge.”

“Bye.” He hangs up and I sit back up and throw myself back down. Why did that make my chest tighten painfully? With a huff, I get up, putting on music and moving to the bathroom. After taking more of my meds, I begin getting ready for the day, or at least lunch. For dinner, I feel like Dad might make me dress up.

As soon as I walk into the dining room, I hear my father’s deep voice. “Better not be wearing that to dinner, Asura.”

“Is this dinner, Dad, or lunch?”

He peers at me over his tablet. “Sassy today, huh?”

“You invited Khazon to dinner?” I ask, sitting next to Killian as Fenric comes out with soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

“Yes, is that a problem?”

I meet his eyes. Dad doesn’t care about my problems.
