Ledger’s brows bounce. “I hope good things, sir.”

My father introduces himself to the others while I move to the bar to get a drink, anything to get the edge off.

“Should you be drinking right now?” Ledger’s voice comes out more as a whisper.

I cock a brow, looking up. Even in these heels, he’s still much taller. “So, you don’t want one?”

“I’ll take one,” he mutters, running a hand through his dark hair, and I grab a glass before pouring another one. I give it to him, sipping mine. The warmth of the whiskey hits my stomach. “So, you and Hazen, huh?”

I freeze. “Ledge…”

“He’s going to be your hellhound, right?”

I glance up. He’s not talking about the kiss or anything? Should I apologize? We weren’t dating, but I did kiss him, too, in the same week. One week in and the drama is a lot. My own fault. I have never been in a relationship with anyone because of my indecisiveness. Khazon asked me out once, but deep down, I knew I had feelings for him and Ozias, Hade’s son, and I wasn’t willing to lose both. I wanted both, though. “Ledger.” I lower my voice, glancing at my family. “About that kiss. It was just a dare.”

He sips his whiskey, red eyes looking down at me. “And the dancing?”

I curse myself. I had forgotten that Hazen and I danced. “Ledge…”

“Come sit and eat!” my father says.

Ledger’s lips curls in a smile. “Come on,” he says, letting me move away first. Like a stupid gentleman, he moves my chair and lets me sit down before helping me push it in. Then he sits across from me, Khazon and Killian on either side of him. Fen and one of the other hellhounds are next to me. Dad is at the head, in between Fen and Killian.

“So, Ledger, how did you become Khazon’s hellhound?” my father asks as the fae staff begins serving us.

“Thank you,” I mutter to the staff.

“I actually wasn’t his first choice. I think he just settled for me,” Ledger says, bumping Khazon.

How good was their relationship? It had to be good, right? To do the bonding ceremony?

Khazon laughs. “I wanted a powerful fire hound, so I got one. Your brother was taken, though.”

I didn’t know Ledger had a brother.

“Punching me in the face isn’t how you should have got me,” Ledger says, looking down at the food, smiling.

My father chuckles. “I remember my hounds. I punched one too. He had a mouth on him.”

Khazon nods, sipping his drink. “That’s Ledger.”

Ledger chuckles.

The dinner goes on with all of them talking. I can tell my father likes Ledger the most because he keeps questioning him, genuinely interested. It got me to learn more about him which I enjoyed.

“Asura, would you mind helping me with the dessert?” my father asks as I sip the last drop of my second whiskey.

I just nod. This is not out of the norm. My father likes to bake… Yeah, my father likes to bake. The devil. I stand, smoothing my skirt down and following him into the kitchen.

“I like him,” my father whispers.

I roll my eyes. “Did you know Khazon forbade me to see him?”

My father gasps. “Well, that’s because he loves you.”

So I’ve heard. “It’s just not going to work, Dad, so…”

“Because this Hazen kid is in the picture now?” my father questions. He loves drama and acting like he knows the situation.
