Everyone seems to have heard about the fight after lunch, and it appears that many of them are betting on who will win. And the bets arenotin my favor.

I barely see Inarian until the class we have together after lunch. There, we make eye contact. I don’t think it is going to go down like this, but students are piling into the gym to see the fight, and the teacher is letting only us in the center. This seems bigger than it needs to be.

“Are you ready?” Inarian asks, wrapping his knuckles.

I inhale deeply. “Yes. This seems… bigger, though.”

“Don’t want to get your ass kicked in front of everyone?” he asks me.

I look up at him. “No, I just don’t want to embarrass you.”

“I’ve seen you fight before. It’s not the greatest.”

“Shit talking already?” Scoffing, I move away to let Hazen wrap my knuckles. I don’t know how to do it, even if I try. My eyes move and I find Ryker in the crowd, leaning on the wall near the gym doors. His eyes are locked on me, and a small smirk is on his lips.

“If he hurts you, I'm killing him.” Ledger’s voice draws my attention.

Ryker?

No, his red eyes are on Inarian.

I roll my eyes, yet the lust that hits my stomach is irremissible. He would hurt Inarian, and then he would fuck me on his corpse. Ledger isthatfucking insane. I mean… He’s done it before, after our first date. I think it’s going to get harder and harder to resist him each time.

“Behave,” I tell him.

“You.”

Amos sits next to him. “Why is he so pissed?”

I shrug. “Men.”

She nods as her hellhound twins sit next to her. They seem to be interested in her and doing everything they can to get her attention.

“All right,” Mrs. Hill says loudly. The dean stands next to her. “If the heir, Asura, wins, Inarian will be her hellhound. If Inarian wins, Asura will move on. Does that sound right?”

I look at Inarian and he nods. His dark eyes are on me. “And I want you to admit in front of everyone that you aren’t worthy of being my reaper.”

Nerves runs through me. “Fine.”

He nods.

“No rules. Anything is allowed besides others getting into the ring,” the teacher says, moving away.

Inarian moves to the mats, rolling his broad shoulders. He’s in a white skintight T-shirt and black sweats. My eyes fall on the way his shirt clings to his chest. When he turns, my eyes move back up, and he smirks. “Your boyfriend isn’t liking how you look at me, princess.”

The way he says princess is way different than how Ledger says it. It seems more like an insult than anything else. He says it like he’s trying to make me mad.

It’s working.

“Ready?” Mrs. Hill shouts the question.

Inarian’s head tilts upward, and I remain the same.

“Go!”

Neither of us move. I half expect him to lunge after me. Instead, he stays unmoving. “You’re first move, princess.”

I roll my eyes and he lunges, trying to catch me off guard. I block his fist with my forearms and launch my leg into his side.
