He barely budges, grabbing my thigh and pulling so I fall onto my back. The thud takes the wind out of me, but I will myself to roll over and get to my feet before he can pounce again.Never stay on your back with him.

I push my hair back and look up at him.

Suddenly, he starts his onslaught of punches. I block and dodge, trying to watch his feet.

Then I see his right foot move.

Fake punch.

I spring to my toes and reel back, putting all my force into a punch to his chest.

He gasps, stumbling back. He looks up, grabbing his chest. “So, we aren’t pulling our punches?”

“Sorry, you underestimate me.”

He straightens. “Never again.” We go, tit for tat, constantly dodging and hitting each other.

Then he steps forward with his right foot again. I launch at the opportunity, grabbing his wrist, and I swing my body forward. With momentum, I wrap one leg around his neck and push his body downward. He falls to his knees, groaning as I push his arm behind his back.

“Try not to get hard over this,” I mutter into his ear.

Inarian lifts himself in the air and I drop from his back, kicking the back of his knee and making him fall to his knees.

He kicks back and I jump back to avoid getting hit. I can tell he’s mad by the way his chest is heaving; he hasn’t done much to be out of breath, especially for a hellhound.

“You think everyone wants you?”

I nod. “You especially.”

He shakes his head. “You are just a spoiled heir.”

Anger bursts inside of me. I jump up, turning and kicking him in the chest. He grabs my ankle before I can pull away. He pulls me closer.

“I’d never fuck you,” he whispers. “You can’t take no as an answer and think you’re entitled to everything. Try a day in Hazen’s shoes where he has no money and—”

“Shut up!” I punch at his face, and he grabs my fist.

“Or Jigsaw, or Ledger, who lost someone he actually fucking loved.”

My eyes snap to his.

“Do you think any of them actually want you?”

My jaw tightens, and I wrap my legs around his body, trying to elbow him.

Instead, he lifts me up and slams me onto the hard ground. Pain erupts inside of me. A mummer runs through the crowd.

“You think you’re worthy of having any of us as a hound? You can have any hound you want. You left Hell and now you are trying so hard to get us. Why? For fame? For the throne you didn’t even fucking want?”

Slowly, I get to my hands and knees. “Because… Hazen deserves a reaper that grounds him from his lightning attacks. I would rather be shocked a million times than to see him shaking with bursts.” My eyes meet his and I taste blood in my mouth. “And Saw? He secretly loves being able to fist fight someone without hurting them. Both his training and mood have improved. I can handle his toxicity like he can handle it, too.”

He lifts his head.

“And you…” I stand, rolling my shoulders. “You want redemption, and you love seeing Ledger pissed off. You aren’t justanotherhound to me.” My eyes move down his body.

He attacks by punching my chest. I hit his forearm hard and he groans.

I think back to the time I saw him shirtless and the number of scars that were there.
