PAIGE

“We’ve been at this for weeks Paige,” Cian yawned, stretching arms above his head as we staked out the luxury apartments our current mark called home. It had been a long day and I knew he was beginning to get a bit of cabin fever. I hated getting rid of my Escalade but I had no choice, it could be tracked and I didn’t need my family tracking me down, trying to stop me. “When are we going to make our move?”

“Soon Cian, soon,” I cajoled him. The last few weeks had taken its toll on my small crew, rotating shifts, constantly moving from one shitty hotel to the next. We were all on tenterhooks, Cian more so because when he wasn’t working for me he was hired muscle for my uncle. “Remember what I promised Cian, you will not see any punishment for helping me out, you have my word on that.”

“It’s not your uncle I’m worried about Paige and you know it,” Cian sighed. I knew who he had been referring to. It made my heart hurt more when I thought of my leather clad bad boy. The last time I saw him I’d been fleeing his beachside home after breaking in to leave Phee a letter. If looks could kill, the one he gave me as I took off like a bat out of hell would have had me meeting my maker that day.

The sound of a car door slamming shut pulled me from my thoughts.

“Shit.” I cursed as I heard the garage door start to close. “Fuck.”

Running to the front door I needed to get out of here fast, I didn’t need whoever it was seeing me or trying to stop me. As my hand reached the door handle, I heard my name.

“Paige?” Damon’s shocked voice set my nerves alight.

Pausing, I hesitated to look over my shoulder. Immediately regretting it as I threw the door open, I had to go before he got a hold of me. I could see the different emotions warring behind his eyes.

Not looking back a second time I flung myself out the door, slamming it behind me and took the stairs two at a time. As I hit the driveway I heard him bare out the door.

“Game on Princess,” He yelled from the front porch, it had me stop dead in my tracks as I slowly turned towards him. I’m guessing he settled on anger because judging from the look on his face, something told me I’d just poked the angry bear. “You can run Paige, but you can’t hide. I’m coming for you, when I get my hands on you, you won't be running anywhere again,”

“Hello? Paige? Are you even listening?” Cian annoyed voice brought me back to the present. I hadn’t really noticed that I’d lost focus or tuned out. Shaking my head back into reality, I turned back to Cian.

“You leave Damon to me Cian, I’ll straighten it all out when we’re finished here,” I tried to reassure him, it would take a bit of working out, but I’d keep this promise to him, after all without his help I’d have never found the asshole we were now keeping tabs on. “When all this is done I promise you, I will never ask for another favor again.”

Waiting for Laoise and Tiernan to show up seemed to take forever. I knew those two had a thing going on. Laoise couldn’t keep her mouth shut when we would get together for breakfast each day.

“You didn’t answer the question though Paige,” Cian continued, he was like a dog with a bone, when he latched on to something he wouldn’t let it go until he was satisfied with an answer. “When are we going to grab this fucker? You know the longer we sit it out the more suspicious he is going to get. Ghost contacted me last night to tell me that he has already started making arrangements to disappear.”

“I just need to secure a spot to hold him at, then we can make our move.” I was a little short with him as our relief showed up and tapped on the window. It wasn’t my intention but it couldn’t be helped. I just didn’t have the answers he was looking for at that moment.

The cool air was like a cold shower, when I opened the window. The sun was setting, and the night life in this seedy part of town had started to come out of the woodworks. It had been a long summer so far but thankfully by tonight I’d have the answers my crew would be looking for then I could start with making amends with those that I’d hurt.

“Anything new to report?” Tiernan asked as he puffed away at his cigarette. Dressed in jeans and a black tee, his shaggy jet black hair held back by his aviators. Paired with a leather chalet and he could pass for Damon’s double.

“Nope,” I answered, with an emphasis on the ‘p’. My eyes, never leaving their target. Alexander Ducane had been holed up in the serviced apartments across the street from us all day, he hadn’t left once, but I knew he’d be on the move shortly. “Guess you two will get to see the action tonight.”

For the last few days, the fucker didn’t surface until just before eight pm, leaving only to get food from one of the local restaurants, then head to the Doll’s House or the Lion’s Den. His movements had become rather predictable these days, and that didn’t sit well with me. It gave credence to Cian’s information. I’d need to act soon before I missed my window of opportunity and this sick asshole slipped through my fingers again.

“Keep me posted if anything changes tonight,” the finality in my voice gave no room for interjection, my crew knew the deal; follow the mark, no excuses. “We’re gonna head back to the hotel, I’ve got a few calls to make, I’ll update you both tomorrow with the plan going forward.”

“Got it Paige,” Laoise’s docile voice came from behind Tiernan, she tried to hide her concern but I could see right through her facade. “Try to get some rest tonight yeah, you’ve been running on empty for too long, if we want to pull this off than we’re all gonna need to be at our bests.”
