“Okay.Okay. Okay. Gather around, people. Please.”

It was at the end of the day, and people were waiting around to see the lighting of the trees. I’d been running around for most of the day, trying to get everyone’s name on the ornaments, so the decorators could get the trees finished in time. Everyone marveled at the trees and were recording them, so I was already giddy that they liked them.

“So, I know y’all are ready to rush home, but I wanted you all here for this moment because I wouldn’t have this without you all. Additionally, I have to thank you all for opening up and accepting me as the new assistant…even though y’all were calling me The Eagle’s Ass for about a month or two.”

They laughed.

“It’s okay. I’m not going to hold it against y’all, though. I want y’all to know that I’m more on y’all’s side than you think I am. Trust me.”

Dymon finally peeked his head through the crowd, making me smile and blush even harder.

“Okay, y’all are giving me that look when you ready for me to end the meeting. Okay. Okay. I’m done talking.”

I turned around and faced the trees, fiddling with the remote that the decorators gave me.

“Drumroll please…”

A few people made the drum roll sound, and after a few seconds, all three Christmas trees lit up bright and pretty. The ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ let me know that I’d done a great job. The ornaments that people wrote their names on had small lights on them, and they danced around. I’d gotten lost in the beauty of it when I heard Jazmine Sullivan’s song, “Let it Burn” start to play.

Call me crazy, but I think I found the love of my life…

It immediately took me back to when Dymon and I took our first vacation, and he had me wilding out in his club. That man brought something out of me that I never knew I held.

And then I heard his voice on the loudspeaker slightly over the music.

“Quinci, turn around, please.”

Turning around, he was behind the receptionist desk, holding the mic of a headset up to his mouth.

“Hey, beautiful.”

I waved like a shy schoolgirl, and everybody ‘awed’. Knowing what he was about to do, my eyes started to water.

“When I first met you, I already knew that you were going to cause a lot of trouble in my life. I didn’t know that the trouble would be me falling in love with you. So deeply in love with you. In all my thirty years of living, I never knew that I was capable of loving someone or even capable of being loved until you. You’re so patient and kind. And hilarious as hell. Even when you’re not trying to be. Everything that I am not, basically. I never played into the notion that opposites attract because how could people that are so opposite of each other even get on each other’s radar, or even make a relationship work, but here we are. All I thought I was going to do was work and die, never finding a wife. You’ve made my life worth living, Wenci Cleverly. For those of you who don’t know, Quinci was so stunned by my handsomeness that she introduced herself as the wrong name.” Everyone chuckled. “Anyways, like Jazmine Sullivan said, when this love shit comes, you never want to give it up, and I don’t. Quinci, can I ask you a question?”

I nodded my head while sobbing.

He walked around the desk, over to me, and got down on his knee. He pulled out a black velour ring box.

“Is this what you were doing this morning?”

“No.”

“What were—”

“Can I ask you the question first?”

“Yes, okay.”

He opened the box, and my mouth fell open. It was the most gorgeous ring that I’d ever seen in my life.

“Quinci, will you marry me?”

“Yes!”

He stood and kissed me deeply while everyone cheered around us.

“Look around, sweetheart.”
