“You have feelings for her. Just admit it.”

“No, I do not. She is the most annoying person I've ever met.”

Yesenda watched him scowl after delivering that line.

“Just make sure you dinnae ruin her if there’s nothing serious between you,” she said.

“It's not like that between us. And if it was, it would still be none of your concern. You’ve been cloistered in an abbey all these years. I doubt you understand the world. I just wanted to inform you of my intentions so you dinnae hear it from anyone else.”

“Aye, thank you for letting me ken your intentions, Ruadh. While I am here, I would also like to request that I be allowed to travel further afield. I am happy to take escorts with me but tis unnecessary if you cannot spare any men.”

“Where would you like to go?”

“I may need to go to Normandy.”

“Normandy! In France?”

“Aye brother, I would like to visit some friends from the abbey and—”

“No.”

“What do you mean, no? You did not let me finish.”

“Tis too far and with the trouble you attract, I doubt you’d reach there in one piece.”

“Is this about what happened yestereve?” she asked.

“Aye it is.”

“Ruadh, twas nothing but some mercenaries causing trouble over a misunderstanding.”

“Yesenda, they almost killed you. Had it not been for the stranger who saved your life and then disappeared, I’d be planning your funeral today. What did you say the hero’s name was again?”

“He did not state his name. He was passing by and saw me defenseless against those frightful men.” Yesenda did not let on that there was no stranger, and she had defended herself. Ruadh would not believe her.

“No, tis decided. If you want to travel, make it closer to home. Now that I think on it, my men and I will escort miss Boyd to her brother’s wedding. While I am away, you should visit Henderson Keep for a while. Mayhap it will be good to be with women your own age.”

This worked in Yesenda’s favor, so she agreed she would visit the Hendersons for a spell.

Chapter 6

1048 - Henderson Land, Scotland

Ian Henderson had an epiphany. He lounged in his bed with Liosa draped across him, pouting and giving him death glares. Something had changed between them, and he wondered why he was still doing this.

Liosa had turned up on his doorstep with a come-hither look. Iain had let her in against his better judgement. She jumped him the moment she was inside and removed his plaid. But Iain stopped her going any further.

That was then and now he lay on the bed staring up at the rafters while she whined because he refused to couple with her.

“Iain, my love, my body has missed your touch. Why are we lying on your bed doing nothing?”

Iain asked, “Liosa, where have you been these past three months?”

“I told you, I was inOnichvisiting my kin.”

“I went toOnichseveral days ago. You hadn't been there for months, they said.”
