“She is adjusting slowly. I would feel better if she were married to a man who could protect her. I am a little regretful you did not wed her. Although I can see you are thrilled with your bride.”

“I regret what happened, but I would not give up Sorcha for the world. But why does Yesenda need protection?”

“Since she returned from the abbey there have been several strange mishaps and tis only by the grace of God has my sister survived them.”

“What mishaps?”

“Well, she was on her way to the priory last sennight to deliver alms for the poor. But on the way, she was thrown from her horse and almost crushed by a moving cart.”

“That is dire indeed.”

“When my men came to her rescue there was a dead man on the roadside. Yesenda said the man was trying to help her when he was trampled to death.”

“Who was the man?” Bram asked.

“That’s the thing. I’d never seen him before. He was no farmer from our region, or a tinker of some sort, and his cart held no goods for barter.”

Bram furrowed his brow, thinking it was strange indeed. “And what else?”

“Then last month, she asked to go to a festival nearby. Of course, I let her go. I sent guardsmen with her and apparently something happened in the village that night.”

“What?”

“Yesenda was at an inn. She wanted fresh water and did not want to wake the innkeeper. So, she went to the well to fetch the water and almost fell in. A man tried to rescue her, but he got caught up in the rope and drowned,” Ruadh said.

“That is strange indeed.”

“Again no one could confirm the identity of the man because he was not from the village.”

“Mayhap your sister is very clumsy or just attracts trouble.”

“Aye, I cannot help but think that she is a walking disaster. I worry because she is innocent being sheltered at the abbey that if she’s not careful, someone could really harm her.”

“Dinnae worry, Ruadh, we will keep an eye on her, seeing as she is most likely completely helpless in the ways of the world. I’ll ensure she remains guarded.”

“Thank you. I will fetch her when I return.”

“And what of marriage? Have you lined someone up for her?” Bram asked.

Ruadh shook his head. “I see no need to rush things.”

“Aye, she is still young.”

“And how fares Iain and your brother, Niall?” Ruadh asked.

“Both are still unmarried. Niall is currently sowing his wild oats acrossAlba, I assume, and Iain, well he is still very stubborn and set in his ways.”

“What of that god awful woman, Liosa?”

Bram sighed. “She is still around. She comes and goes. Wreaks havoc with his life, then leaves again.”

“I dinnae ken why they dinnae just marry. They have been dancing around each other for years.”

“Well, tis not for want of Iain asking. He has offered for her hand several times, but she is opposed to the union.”

“What do you think of her, Bram?”

I dinnae like her because I dinnae like the person Iain becomes when she is around. She leads him on a merry dance with no proper concern for his feelings. He deserves better. He is a good man.”
