“Wait… she was in an abbey all this time?”

“Aye.”

Liosa glanced at the longhouse for a moment and then continued walking. She was deep in thought.

Iain preferred it that way.

When she spoke again, he was rather stunned.

“Iain, let’s get married.”

“What?”

“You’ve asked me before and I’ve decided to accept.”

“Well, I withdraw my request.”

“But you just said—”

“Tis too late Liosa. Please understand, I no longer want to marry you.”

“But all these years you’ve pursued me and suddenly she arrives and you dinnae want me anymore?”

“No, all these years I was a fool, and it took that lass in there to make me realize it.”

“Iain, I am the love of your life. You told me so yourself. You will tire of this woman and then you’ll be sorry you treated me so terribly.”

“Liosa, are you jealous of her?”

“Of course I am! She is trying to steal you away from me.”

Iain muttered, “She doesna have to try hard.”

“Iain, you ken I will always love you.”

He just rolled his eyes and kept walking.

“Tis true! I am just confused, and I just need time to—”

“That’s the problem, Liosa. Everything is always about your needs and your wants and your plans. I am done with it all.”

“Iain, please, let us start afresh—”

“You dinnae understand, Liosa. What I am telling you is that I no longer want to be with you. For the first time in my life, I realize I deserve better. I suggest when we return, you pack your things and go home.”

“But I have nowhere else to go.” She looked forlorn.

“Liosa, stop with the games. I will not stomach it anymore. Go back to the men who pay you to have the life you want.”

“Fine then. You need not escort me back. I shall remain in the village. I still have friends there, but mark my words, Iain Henderson, you’ll be sorry you ever threw me over for someone else.”

Iain just shook his head, wondering not for the first time what he ever saw in Liosa.

Breakfast

Iain rose early the next morning. He made his way to the longhouse to prepare breakfast before it became overrun with Tyra’s patrons. When he opened the door, he was greeted with a glimpse of his future.
