“Patiencemademoiselle,” he said. “I am coming.”

Yesenda was crouched low behind a tall hedgerow. She moved closer trying to get a look at the people within. Inside was a woman spread naked on the bed and a naked man standing by the fireplace. She could not see clearly but the woman’s garments, which were thrown over a chair, looked familiar.

Liosa?she thought to herself.

It didn't take a scholar to figure out what was happening between the two people inside. Yesenda was tossing up whether to wait longer or just barge in there when she was startled by a noise beside her.

“What’s happening inside? I cannot, see?” a young boy whispered beside her.

“Seamus! Did I not tell you to stay away?”

Yesenda dragged Seamus away from the window and shuffled him out of view.

“I was curious. Tis in my nature, remember?”

“Well, you need to take care that your curious nature doesna get you killed. Your ma is right. You should not be sneaking about, peeking through windows.”

“But you’re doing it.”

“That’s different. I’m a grown woman.”

When Yesenda glanced back at the house, she could hear moaning coming from within.Damn! She needed to get Seamus back to his mother and then hie back to the inn.

They were startled when Kieran asked, “Is there a reason you two are hiding in the bushes?” He was standing by the road with his arms folded across his chest and glaring at Yesenda.

Yesenda quickly grabbed Seamus and stood to the side. “Um… I saw this young lad, and I wanted to make sure his arm was healing properly. I was about to go find his ma. Isn’t that right Seamus?”

“Aye,” Seamus said as he shook his head to indicate ‘no’.

Yesenda nudged him, and he started nodding.

“Well, we best go find his ma then,” Kieran said, giving them a skeptical look.

When they were walking back to the glen, Kieran asked, “What were you really doing in the bushes, Yesenda?”

“Exactly what I told you,” she replied.

He sighed. “So, it’s going to be like that, is it?”

“Like what? Kieran, I told you, I found the lad wandering about and agreed to help him.”

Kieran just shook his head and sighed. When they reached the healer’s cottage, he escorted her inside and closed the door. He then stood outside by the window.

Several moments passed before Kieran yelled, “Yesenda?”

“Aye?” she responded and came to the window.

“The next time you pay someone to distract me, make sure tis not Margarite. That woman cannot keep a secret if her life depended on it.”

Yesenda blushed with embarrassment then said, “Kieran… I—”

But he was already walking away. Then she heard him yell, “No trouble? My arse!”

It was dusk, Yesenda was in the cottage when the door was flung open, and Iain came stalking in. Again, staring directly at her, and he was furious.

“Why were you in the village today?” he growled.
