“Iain?”

“Aye, love. Stay with me. You have a fever.”

“I love you, Iain.”

“I love you too, sweeting.”

“Are you taking me home?”

“Aye, we’re going home.”

Sometime later she woke again, still feverish, and she saw the beautiful angel.

“Hello angel from heaven,” she said.

Torstein started chortling. “You better not call me that lass or that big brute beside you will try to punch me again.”

She saw it was Iain and said, “Oh, he’s not a brute. He is my husband.”

“Such a pity, the pretty ones are always taken,” Torstein said with a wink.

Chapter 17

Henderson Land, Glencoe

Three weeks later, all was well again. Iain and Yesenda were back on Henderson land. Gideon, Sienna and Edmund were settled in a safe place, and Brother Mateo had since joined them. Bishop Odo was true to his word, and the threat to Edmund had passed. They spread word far and wide that the family who lived in the cottage atKentallenhad all perished, including a young lad by the name of Edmund.

It was still unclear why Yesenda was being targeted since no one had seen Liosa for a while.

But the truth always comes out. When it did, they realized they should have been paying better attention.

The Attack

Yesenda walked to the training grounds at the Keep. Since their return, Bram had asked her if she would like to train some warriors. She knew she could teach them a lot. Yesenda wore trews, tunic, and long cloak. Her mace was strapped to her side. Iain had retrieved it fromKentallen. She was lost in thought when she spied a familiar person walking ahead. It was Silas, the monk who worked for Bishop Odo. She frowned in confusion, wondering why he was there.

Suddenly, Silas turned abruptly and said, “Finally, I get to kill you properly.”

Yesenda paused and said, “So Bishop Odo lied. He is the one who wants me dead?”

Silas laughed. “No, Matilda of Flanders, the duke’s wife, pays me handsomely to spy on Odo. She does not trust him at all. I am here because she does not want anyone taking the dukedom from William.”

Things seemed to click into place for Yesenda. She remembered the missive at Gibson farm. The ‘M’ seal addressed to ‘Brother S’ and it all made sense now.

“What are you going to do, monk?” Yesenda asked, preparing herself for the attack.

“My job is to kill anyone who can prove Edmund is the legitimate heir. That includes you,” Silas said.

“Well, you can certainly try,” Yesenda replied.

She sensed someone behind her and turned to see Liosa stepping out of the bushes.

“What are you doing here, Liosa?” she asked, taking a step back from both.

“I am making sure my patroness Matilda gets what she wants,” Liosa replied. “I have been her informant for many years. From the moment you arrived, you ruined everything for me.”
