“A wise girl once told me the importance of first birthday gifts.”

She removes the gold chain from the box to rest the pendant of a plane in her palm. Unable to speak, Jessa stares at it with admiration.

“Bentley is obsessed with planes.”

“I know.”

“You don’t know how much…” her words trail off at the same time her chest rises and falls. “How did you even find this?”

“With much-needed patience to scour every jewelry store in Madrid.”

I’m about to mention my dealings with one of the sales assistants when Jessa lunges forward, grabbing my face with both her hands to smash her lips against my mouth.

The jolt electrifies every inch of my body, the cravings for her only intensifying with every taste of her beautiful mouth. A soft moan escapes her, but then she pulls away, eyes wide with heavy pants following.

“I… uh… wanted to thank you.”

I try to catch my breath, my gaze falling upon her pink lips with a primal need to taste more of her. It was her rule, the no-touching thing, so I wasn’t going to force myself on her.

“That was quite a thank you.” I reach out to touch her face, seeing her expression torn for her sudden move. “Don’t feel guilty.”

Her eyes fall to the ground. “This is harder than I thought.”

My hand reaches out to her arm, eager to hold her. With her face against my chest, I kiss the top of her hair, trying to ease her guilty thoughts.

“We’ll get through this.”

Jessa moves out of my arms, creating a small distance. “How? You know what, I don’t want to think about it.”

“We’ll get through this because I need you all to myself.”

Jessa’s mouth twitches for a grin to appear slowly. She places her hands on my chest, expelling a long-winded sigh.

“You know, the sexual tension is killing me.”

A smirk falls upon my lips. “Oh really? You. I thought you were all vanilla.”

“More like Neapolitan, a mixed assortment of flavors depending on my mood.”

“What’s your mood now?”

“All flavors,” she teases. “But I’m going to behave.”

We both still our movements to turn around at the same time, only to see Bentley fast asleep on the floor hugging a stuffed bear.

“He’s knocked out,” I whisper.

I move toward him, bending down to scoop him in my arms. Slowly, I carry Bentley to his crib, where I place him down, then cover him with his blanket.

“You’re so good with him,” Jessa says, watching me move a strand of hair away from his eyes. “He adores you, you know.”

“He’s a good kid, and you’re doing a great job. I hope you know that.”

Jessa smiles, her face lighting up so beautifully. “We should head back downstairs.”

Before we go, I stop her at the door.

“This isn’t going to be easy. He’ll fight you for Bentley,” I remind her because the weight of the cold hard truth is too heavy to ignore. “But I need you to know I’m here for you every step of the way.”
