I take a deep breath, wishing to get off the topic of my so-called uneventful life.

Lizzie is quick to inform me about her life as a single mum with a five-year-old daughter. Apparently, the father is absent. Some ex who bailed when he found out about the pregnancy.

“So, basically, I don’t date. Therefore, don’t have sex.”

“That’s a lot to take in,” I say slowly, mid-chew. “But I understand the whole dating thing, especially since any potential partner can lead to being a stepfather to your daughter.”

“Kacey is her name,” Lizzie mentions with a smile. “I mean, sometimes it would be nice just to have a man worship me, sexually, that is.”

I nod with a chuckle. “A girl’s gotta eat. Is that the saying?”

Lizzie tilts her head back, laughing with me. “Amen.”

After lunch, the waiting room is nonstop with patients. I manage to make myself a quick coffee, my third for the day. This time, I add an extra shot of caffeine just to make it through.

Lizzie wheels her chair over to me. She brings a bunch of files with her, all of which need data entry. Thankfully, I can type quickly, and my accuracy skills are pretty high.

Dr. Jenner is still consulting with a patient who seems to take longer than an hour. I want to ask Lizzie what’s going on but decide against it. It’s only my first day, and I shouldn’t be judging patients who need more than an hour to talk about their problems.

With a pile of files in my hand, I walk outside to the main reception area to return them to Lizzie when I see a familiar pose sitting inside the waiting room. The perfectly tailored black Gucci suit, with tanned leather shoes, belongs to the one and only Eric Kennedy.

“OMG,” he almost shouts. “Addy, is this your new job? I had no idea.”

Eric presses his hand to his neck like it’s the biggest news of the week. I knew this wasn’t the case when, according to Millie, Rocky and Nicky were busted having sex in an airplane restroom.

“Yes, this is the new job that I was talking about. Surely, Mom would’ve told you?”

“Your mother says a lot of things, all of which goes in one ear and out the other, unless, of course, she’s talking about your father in the bedroom.”

I press my lips into a firm smile. “My mother would never reveal my father’s secrets to anyone. I know her well.”

“Touché, young grasshopper.”

“Anyway, what are you doing here?”

“I’ll have you know I come here every week,” he states matter-of-factly. “To air my grievances. It’s important to get it out of my system, so I can enjoy the weekend.”

I walk closer to him, so Lizzie can’t hear me.

“So let me get this straight. You pay one of the top therapists in Beverly Hills to air your grievances every week?”

Eric crosses his arms beneath his chest, then nods.

“Don’t you air your grievances enough between Mom, Adriana, and what about Kate?”

“Fine,” he answers in a disgruntled tone. “There are some issues in the bedroom.”

My hand raises to stop him from speaking any further.

“You’re right,” I tell him, “Dr. Jenner is the perfect person to speak to.”

Dr. Jenner exits the room and comes over to say hello.

“I’m so sorry, Addison. It’s been quite a day,” she says, catching her breath. “Have you settled in okay?”

“Yes,” I respond with a warm smile. “Lizzie and Christine have been accommodating by showing me around and training me on processes.”

“I’m glad.” She glances toward Eric. “Mr. Kennedy, it’s nice to see you again.”
