I scrunch up my face. “Too much information, Ava.”

“What’s the emergency? Man problems?” Ava laughs at herself. “Oh, that’s right. Not you, Miss I-don’t-need-a-man-for-anything.”

My gaze flicks up to meet Masen’s devious stare. The left corner of his lip is curled up into a smirk, and I quickly swallow the lump inside my throat and ignore just how handsome he looks sitting across from me.

And how sexy he looked between my legs.

“It’s nice to see you again, Addison,” Masen says in a sarcastic tone.

I press my lips together into a hard smile. “Well, actually, you saw me at the beginning of the week, remember?”

“How silly of me to forget,” he notes in dark amusement. “My apologies, I’ve been preoccupied at work. There was something important which needed my undivided attention.”

The adrenaline shoots through me, causing a tingling sensation in my chest. This is what the arrogant jerk wants, to see me crumble at his words like the timid and shy woman he thinks I am.

But something inside me begins to stir. If he wants to play, I’ll play just as dirty.

“I hope you completed the task to satisfaction. There’s nothing worse than incompetency inside the office.”

Masen’s expression remains fixed, but his hazel eyes refuse to look anywhere else.

“I couldn’t agree more. There’s nothing worse than someone who refuses to do the job right,” he chastises. “When you commit to something, you need to give it your best. Never back down. I expect the same in return.”

My thighs press together as I quickly turn away and smile at Emmy. Okay, maybe I’m not so good at this so-called game. If Ava and her family weren’t here, I’d know exactly what to do with his smug face right now.Bury it between my legs again.

“Look, whatever is going on between you two, seriously, it’s so not ten years ago anymore,” Ava mentions with a frown. “We’re all adults. The two of you just need to shake on it and be friends.”

“I can be amicable,” I tell her.

Ava turns to look at Masen, waiting for a response. “And you?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Ava. Your sister and I just never had anything in common, isn’t that right?”

I nod. “It’s true. I mean, he’s a manwhore, and I’m the woman who studies such behavior and will eventually be charging women who need therapy for encountering men just like him.”

Austin shakes his head, hiding his grin while Ava bursts out laughing.

“Okay, stay as enemies,” Ava resigns. “Whatever works for you two.”

Across the table, Masen’s sneer is very typical of him. I cross my arms proudly having pointed out the truth.

“Moving on to why I came here. I need to borrow a dress.”

Ava’s eyes light up. “Please tell me it’s a date!”

I shrug my shoulders. “Something like that.”

“Please excuse us, gentlemen. We shan’t be long.”

Ava grabs my arms to follow her outside the room without even warning me. I don’t even get a chance to see Masen’s reactions, but he wouldn’t care anyway. Last night, we agreed for it to be a one-time thing. Okay, so maybe a two-time thing, but that’s that.

Inside Ava’s room, the wardrobe is massive, of course, and bigger than my entire bedroom in the apartment. Everything is neatly categorized into colors, garments, and even her jewelry is displayed in glass cabinets.

“Okay,” she squeals. “Who’s the lucky man you’re going on a date with?”

My hands run across the different fabrics, stopping at a red gown with a long sash draping from the shoulder.

“It’s Cruz. It’s not a date. I’m going as his date to some work thing for his parents.”
