“Wait, Addy?”

“Yeah?”

“I promise I won’t bring anyone home,” he assures me, but I sense something odd in his tone.

I’m probably overthinking it because he’s had a lot to drink and is unable to control his emotions. Typical Cruz, getting all sentimental after drinking beer and shots.

As soon as I hang up the phone, I jump out of bed and scour through my wardrobe. There’s nothing in there remotely formal. It’s just a bunch of sundresses and one cocktail dress, but it borderlines on being more suited to a club scene.

Dammit.

I rack my brain thinking about what dresses were at my parents’ house, but certain I’d worn them at too many events to recycle again. Great, now I’m thinking like Ava.

Ava, of course. Mrs. Fashionista will have something I can borrow.

My eyes scan the room for my keys, spotting them on my dresser. I quickly change into a pair of navy sweats, sneakers, and a white midriff sports top. It’ll only be Ava and possibly Austin who’ll see me anyway.

The drive is only fifteen minutes away. When I arrive, I drive down the side entrance to the back of the house as they have two driveways. I remove the keys from the ignition and find Ava’s house key buried in between my apartment keys. There are two keys, one belonging to Ava’s place and one to Millie’s.

However, I use my key to open the door and enter with caution this time. I’ve learned my lesson after accidentally seeing Will and Mille half-naked in the kitchen.

“Ava, are you here? I have an emergency,” I shout while trying to jiggle my key out of the lock.

Voices are filtering from inside the dining room.

“Addy, is that you?” Ava yells back.

I stop at the kitchen counter to grab a banana from the fruit bowl. Quickly peeling the skin, I take a big bite while looking for my sister.

As I turn the corner into the dining room, I stop dead in my tracks.

“Addy, what are you doing here? Is everything okay?”

My mouth falls open. Then my eyes widen at the sight of Masen sitting at the table beside Austin. He’s dressed in a navy suit similar to the one he wore last night when he…

This can’t be happening.

I can barely swallow the banana in my mouth, but I’m not in a position to spit it out either. Suddenly, the panic sets in as I begin to hyperventilate. The room is extra warm even though my midriff exposes a lot of skin.

“Aunty Addy,” Emmy calls while reaching out for me.

My niece’s greeting distracts me enough to swallow the rest of my banana. She squirms out of her chair to run for my legs. I lift her and kiss her cheek even though there’s pumpkin all over her face. More and more, she’s looking like Austin and less like Ava, aside from the color of her eyes.

Purposely, I avoid looking at Masen, knowing he’s staring at me and waiting for attention.

“I needed to speak to you about something urgent, but I didn’t realize you have company,” I barely manage, praying my skin doesn’t turn red from embarrassment. “I’ll just go. I can talk to you later.”

Ava stands up. “Don’t be silly. There’s food here.”

I raise my hand to decline the offer. “Please, I’m fine. I just ate.”

“A banana isn’t dinner,” Ava points out.

“Actually…” I begin with, then continue quickly, “… bananas contain fiber, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and several other beneficial plant compounds.”

Austin presses his lips together to suppress his smile. “It’s true.”

“Fine, I’m not arguing with you two again. The avocado argument got me pregnant.”
